I like bodyloading a lot. It just seems so impossible to people.
Coin under watch, coin on shoulder and coin in spectators pocket/wallet are some of my favourite effects. |

A ball of yarn. I saved the first dollar I earned as a kid (Silver one in Nevada) -- then misplaced it. My grandma had me unravel a huge ball of yarn to find it. I didn't think of it as magic at the time since she wasn't a magician. The best part was the stories she told while I took two hours to wind the ball up again. Years later I found a metal "sl*d* amongst her sewing things. Must be a hundred years old. Still have it.

The first time I saw Larry Jenning's Coin and Beer can.
One of the perks of working in Reno, Nv. was meeting and seeing the greats and not so great.

My own favorites are tricks I put on the NYCMS DVD series. Three times coin to card (the newest version is on the Penguin Live lecture), Case Solved, where the coin and selected card wind up in the card case, and Mint Condition where a signed quarter winds up in a box of lister mints. My favorite is my Nest of Boxes routine because it is a full routine whee the nest of boxes are a sure surprise. I also enjoy Scotty York's coin to a sugar packet, and of course the classic Al Goshman salt and pepper shakers.

I'll agree with Doug and Laurens: Both the Nest of Boxes (with an initialed quarter inside) and The Mark, created by John Murray and revived by Paul Richards. Both get the best reactions for me!

I like to put it in a person's pocket. I did it to my boss she couldn't believe it. The top of coffee cups and water bottles is great.
Mickey Silver. Can do it so good he puts it in a person's top shirt pocket right under their nose. He can do it so fast without getting caught. Paul |

How does nest of boxes compare to nest of wallets?
I use nest of wallets all the time and would think it's more impossible but I've not seen a laymen's reaction to the boxes, so would appreciate peoples' views. I too love body loading and think it's the only impossible location you can get away with using extras. |

Coins in Globe. I think Roth and York both had versions. One I believe was with a ring.

Slydini would make the coin appear from the inside of his suit jacket. I never see anyone doing this now.
Making the coin appear from the material of your sleeve. Waiters and waitresses apron pockets. A persons hood. The top of the ceiling. Paul |

Several comments here have me musing on the distinction between "impossible" as in defiance of physical possibilities, and "Impossible" because it is an "unexpected place" -- often because the routine has the spectator expecting the coin to arrive somewhere else. The degree to which a spectator expects or anticipates the coin to arrive at a location can effect the power of the magic experience.
For example, imagine several object on a table, possibly a coin purse, an orange and sealed envelope and an egg. After demonstration a Transportation effect in which a coin moves from one a known place to a known "empty" place, the coin vanishes in spectacular fashion. You ask a spectator where they think the coin might have traveled with a sweeping gesture to the four objects on the table. Whichever they choose is demonstrated to hold the missing coin. The location of the coin is not "expected" to be in any of these when the coin vanishes, but anticipation grows when you focus the choice to a free selection -- made impossible because of the nature of the object in full view and the fact that a spectator is making the selection. Yet, methinks the magical impact of this effect will be influenced by the nature of the object itself. The purse will never be selected because it is a natural place for a coin to be. In fact, you include it to make the other objects seem more impossible. Any of the remaining objects might be chosen depending on the bias and prior experience of the spectator. Regardless, how you go about revealing that the coin is indeed inside that object is also critical. Do you handle it? Does the a spectator "open" the object? Are you using a marked coin? The issue here is that the "impossibility" of the effect can me "sold" to the audience and is not dependent on the personal preference of the performer. You can create the expectation that magic will occur and create the belief that the location is impossible. In contrast, just having the missing coin be found in an strange location might be more entertaining but have less magic impact.

I just did the quarter in Nest Of Boxes. One person said, after the first box was opened and there is a second box, "That's IMPOSSIBLE!" Then when the marked quarter was found, there was stunned silence and gaping mouths.
I keep forgetting how much I get out of Viking props. That Nest Of Boxes, though...wow. Killer effect! Doug |
