I'm going to have a spec choose a number between one and 9. As a tongue-in-cheek force, I am going to show a card with nine numbers, eight of which have been x'd out with a reason not to choose them. I can think of the simple ones, but need help with the rest.
Suggestions?

Here's what I have so far:

1- The loneliest number
2- ?
3- (number I want them to choose)
4 - 4 horsemen of the apocalypse
5- ?
6- 666 mark of the beast
7- 7 deadly sins
8- ?
9- ?

So, nine is also gone...

No number 2... Who wants Number 2?

The expression "take 5" could be turned into an explanation why the 5 has gone.
'I said take 5 and they did'..

The last time I heard someone say 4 I got hit on the head by a golf ball. So that had to go.

"2" looks like a swan, doesn't it. A solitary swan. Watch it swim away, looking for it's companion.

"1" resembles a stick. Last time someone chose the "1" and I told him to take his stick and beat it.

"2" many cards.

3's a crowd and there's too many people here already.

Oh whoops, you want them to choose 3.

1 is gone
2 was told to shoo
4 is out the door
5 is no longer alive
6 is off doing tricks
7 has gone to heaven
8 (also through pearly gate)
9 isn't one of mine
