Yesterday, I shipped a package through USPS (I have tracking info). But today, I got a call from the buyer telling me that it was shipped to an old address (maybe a year old?) still showing through his Paypal account (different state, too).

Has anyone here ever had to deal with something similar, and if so, how did you handle it?

I plan to ask at the post office later today (package due to be delivered tomorrow). Other than that, will this rely on the honesty of the people to whom the package is delivered?

I just spoke with a magic dealer friend, and his reply was basically what I was suspecting. I think about all I can do is wait.

Probably will come down to them, buy sounds like his problem if he hasn't updated his Paypal account. Unless he specifically gave you a different address and you didn't check the Paypal address against it.

It was all through Paypal, and from his end. In fairness, I almost made the same mistake once. Paypal gives an option menu for the preferred shipping address. If the default is wrong, you have to manually change it. I have tried in the past to delete old addresses from this menu, without success. There is probably a way to do this, but I have not found it.

I always email confirmation of order well ahead of actual shipping. These display the address that will be used. Unless I get a reply with correction, this is all I can do. It's the first time I've experienced this, but when I spoke with my friend, he indicated it happens a lot.

Fortunately (depending on how you look at it), the order was only for $40. It could have been a LOT worse.

If you sent a confirmation confirming the shipping address shown on the purchaser's pay pal account, it really isn't your problem at all. (Although I do understand why you would feel bad about it.)

I think that if the purchaser had any sense he would have filed a forwarding address with the post office when he moved.

The USPS does not forward mail indefinitely:

For 12 months the USPS will forward all first class mail to you. For the six months after that the mail will be returned to sender, but your new address will be listed on it. After those 18 months you fall out of the system entirely.

Log in to your PayPal account and go to your Profile page. There, you will be able to delete old addresses and edit other information.

I think the OP stated that the address was only about a year old.

But again, if he sent a confirmation email to the buyer containing the shipping address provided by paypal and then shipped it to that address, he's legally done all he's required to do. It's the buyer's negligence if he failed to change the address or provide a forwarding address to the post office.

Additionaly, you'd think the buyer would make an effort to contact the new residents at his old place or at least the local post office in that neighborhood.

Did you try contacting the local post office to stop the package from being delivered to that address? Since it's not due to be delivered until tomorrow, I would think you could still intercept it and have it forwarded to the proper address.

I have sent a follow up email to the buyer, and at this point he has not replied. As I already mentioned, his voice mail box is full, so I can't leave a message there. I know that at this point it is not my problem, but my concern is that magicians helping magicians thing, ya know? I feel bad for the guy and hope it works out for him.

@Kabbalah - thanks for the profile edit/update info for Paypal. Mine is showing OK, so I suspect any issues I have are in the systems of some companies that I buy from. Not a big deal because I've learned to pay attention and confirm details before clicking that last button.

If the buyer moved, he should have updated his Paypal account.
