Tragic. Reminds me of a similar story where an 8 year old boy in my state a few years ago accidentally shot and killed himself with an uzi at a shooting range (and under parental supervision). What kind of parent thinks it's a good idea to put a deadly weapon in the hands of a child??? And these incidents were supervised by "experts" to boot. Sad. Are we such a gun obsessed/thrill seeking nation that it's no longer good enough to take your kid to the amusement park or to the museum (or one of a million other harmless things), but you have to take them to a freaking gun range to shoot uzis??
By the way, I'm from the state that endured the horrific Sandy Hook shooting of 20 school children. We really need to dial back the gun rhetoric in this country. Don't want to eliminate them, but let's not glorify them and let's certainly not encourage children to use them. I have a feeling the 9 year old girl in this story wasn't begging her gun-neutral parents to shoot an uzi. I'm willing to bet that it's more likely her parents are into guns and thought it would be "cool" to bring her to a shooting range. My condolences to the victim's family. So sad. Ron

I have only a laymans knowledge of guns so correct me if I'm wrong. My first thought was, what kind of expert thinks that a nine year old girl can handle the recoil of such a powerful weapon? It's my understanding that full grown men have to exert considerable effort to control such guns.
I think people should have the right to own a gun, but where in this situation was simple common sense applied? I didn't watch the video btw. I've have enough horrific images burn onto my brain thanks to the internet.

This is sick on so many levels.
Even if this insanity had resulted in the nine year old successfully firing the weapon, did anyone stop to think about what such an experience would do to the development of her personality? How is this helpful at age 9? Were they trying to teach her self defence? Now she's going to have to fight for her happiness, if not her sanity, for the rest of her life. The image of that man lying there, and the knowledge that she was the cause, will be with her for the rest of her life. I read about a pill that they can give to people who suffer extreme emotional trauma, that prevents the horrific memories from taking hold in the long term memory. Supposedly you simply forget the incident ever happened. If such a pill exists they should have given it to this poor kid. Even though she was holding the gun, this is in no way her fault. Now she has to suffer the consequences of the unbelievable stupidity of others. And for what?

Here's a work place safety tip for all gun instructors:
Rule number 1- never hand a 9 year old an Uzi. Rule number 2- see rule number 1 |

The rest of the world is getting fed up sympathizing with you over these incidents. This, Sandy Hook, and all the other atrocities are a direct result of your red-neck gun culture, and all the hand-wringing and online moaning will make no difference. This will only end when the USA grows up.

Tony, you never know when a nine year old might need to form a militia in order to oppose, by force of arms, a tyrannical, colonial government. Any minute now, David Cameron and the Queen may be making their moves across the Atlantic. It is imperative that America is armed at all times and at all ages.
This tragic death occurred in the heat of battle, in a moral war against any who would question the common sense of the Second Amendment, as it stands in the year of 2014. My nine year old was playing with a toy dinosaur and a toy ostrich today. He made the ostrich win, it was very amusing. He has toy guns, too, but prefers to use a walking stick my brother made for him. He's funny like that. But, of course, he's only nine years old, and he doesn't have a Second Amendment to consider. |

Britain executed their King because he wouldn't listen to parliament. It became a republic before the U.S. did.
It is illegal for the Queen to interfere with affairs of state. |

Watch who you joke with...some countries are still working on that whole independence from Britain thing. They are welcome to it, dear sir. I personally would be sad, as I have blood lines from England, Wales and from Scotland. I'm worried by the numpties who are leading them, but not by the principle of the thing. What on earth do you take me for? Scotland has been a distinct country since time immemorial, and for most of recorded history it has been its own country, and fiercely independent. The Union has been a comparative flash in the pan, historically, but you need a long historical perspective to understand this. Do you actually know much about our domestic politics, or do you just watch the telly? We are all rather civilised about it these days. |

I don't just watch the Telly; I Google, too! Plus, my grandmother was straight out of Nottingham.
I do intend to make use of the word "numpties," which is a new one on me.

The threat of being booted out, albeit without actual decapitation, seems to be what holds our silly form of government intact. Charles I lost his head over constitutional matters, and Charles II was admitted back under the terms of what became a shifting, malleable quasi-constitution. The upshot of this chaotic outcome is that the sacred cows are few and far between, in terms of what we can sensibly amend without public uproar. The downside is the lack of limits to what we can legally amend in the face of public pressure. That's politics, baby. |
