I find this a curious branch of magic and although I know it is magic merged with religion is it, let's say Anglican, Christian, Protestant? Or do magicians apply it to whatever their faith is? I would love to know a little bit more about this branch of our art. Thanks.

That question has been asked and answered many times here already. And it probably will get you more specific information by doing a search for "gospel magic" in this forum.
This isn't intended to avoid being helpful. Rather it is providing the most helpful information available as the question has many excellent responses already, and you won't have to wait for others to now answer. My short response is that it is nonsecular, while also applying to various denominations. It is using magic to carry or illustrate a gospel message. Welcome Friend! BroDavid

Thanks for the response Bro David. Do you perform gospel magic in your area and is it mostly limited to the church environment? I figured the topic was already touched on and overdone, but thank you for your response.

Welcome to the Café and as BroDavid stated there are plenty of discussions regarding this topic on here. I have been performing gospel magic for about 17 years now. I have performed at churches, singles conferences, church youth and children's camps and more. And if I do a secular show I generally always add a trick in there with a gospel message. Hope you find the Café a warm place to visit. Jim |

As an evangelist, except for my local FCM chapter, I don't do magic for the "church" or Christians in general. To me, that would be preaching to the choir, and although I realize that not all who go to church are born again Christians, I still see my calling as evangelism and not as strengthening the body at church. When asked to do a church show, and I have been asked to perform at churches wherever I go, I simply recommend others who do a far better church show than I would do anyway.
I do a street routine and pass the hat. I perform wherever I am that I can draw a crowd. I have done Northern Ohio, New Orleans and the mean streets of Detroit. My routine is not based on chapter and verse as I see done by most gospel magicians. I do some of that, but I also perform illusions that illustrate a Biblical principal in general; like how easy it is to fall into sin or what will happen when you make a deal with the Devil. I also do routines that are purely and simply entertaining. So, I think of myself more as a Christian illusionist and never really don't consider myself a "gospel magician." My job in performing is plant the seed of salvation, making the way clear. I do that without hiding what I am doing at all. In fact, I explain it as part of my introduction and I still entertain all kinds of people enough that they put money in my hat and I believe that they also go away with "something to think about." And I have done what I believe I have done, then my job is done. I am just a planter. It is up to God to provide the increase. BroDavid

Likewise, if you ever get up to British Columbia. Thanks for the intro guys. Are there a lot of gospel magicians or Christian illusionist in the States? Meaning are there organized conventions and the likes where it is all gospel-based?

Bro gilbert; A few topics down you can read about the Fellowship of Christian Magicians including a post from Steve Varro, past president of FCM and owner of Doc Haley Magic, the world's largest (I believe) retailer of gospel magic effects and supplies.

Sounds like the makings of an FCM Chapter up north, eh?

Welcome Bro Gilbert.
The whole idea of gospel magic is to spread and teach the word of God using magic as your tool. I too consider myself a Christian illusionist. I mainly do my magic for children in Sunday school classes currently. I am in the process of putting together a full stage show however. If God wants it to happen then I will make sure that it does!

Thanks for the response Guardian. Now do you prefer the term Christian illusionist over gospel magic for the same reasons as Bro David or are there some other reasons why gospel magic is evolving into Christian illusion? And as far as that stage show goes, don't wait for God. Just get out there and make that thing happen. Amen.

I would encourage anyone who has a heart for God’s kingdom and magic to combine the two. We have been doing gospel magic for quite a while now and God has blessed us immensely. We have seen people saved and have made many great friends through this ministry, not to mention we make a pretty good buck at it as well.
Pray and seek God’s will about this. I am reminded of an old preacher who said, “There is always enough work to go around, so jump in and do something.” |

And then there's the preacher who stated, "The harvest truly [is] great, but the labourers [are] few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest."

I bring this up only because I often run into people who equate "gospel magic" with "religious magic" which is not accurate. Even in this forum we occasionally see people who come in with that concept. John LeBlanc Houston, TX |

Good point John. I think it is a misunderstanding to come to a conclusion that "gospel magic" is evolving into Christian magic. It is my understanding that the two have always been pretty much the same, it is just another term, since gospel is basically interpreted as good news which is what the New Testament and Christianity is all about, as John defined in his above post.

"You say tomatoe I say tomato"-type thing. I guess it's all the same if your using them for God's salsa. Thanks for clearing things up guys. Being a stranger to this though John, when I hear "gospel magic" I do associate it with "religious magic" or having to do with religion. Is religious magic a whole different camp? I liked your idea of combining all things together as well Shadow.
