Rough several weeks for entertainment...Williams, Bacall, and now Rivers. Wasn't a huge fan as a matter of style, but obviously extremely talented and a longtime fixture in the industry.

She was funnier when she was much younger, but then so were most of us.
One of the few counter-examples of my belief that most conservative comedians are not particularly funny.

I met Joan Rivers a few times. (The last agent I had was actually the first agent she had- the late Jack Siegel, the inspiration for Broadway Danny Rose.) Offstage, she never struck me as particularly political either way.

She deserved her easy out...
I always enjoyed whatever she said and got a lot of additional respect for her from that film. Can you imagine being 81 and getting fired up for anoother national tour? She plowed thru airports a lot faster than I do! She'll leave a certain silence behind and I'll miss her.

If my assessment of her sounded harsh, I didn't mean it to be. I think she was extremely talented and very very courageous and groundbreaking in her career. In her way, arguably as important to American comedy as Lenny Bruce.

She was a great comedian, no doubt. But she's nowhere near Lenny Bruce when it comes to influence on American comedy. And it's really an apples and oranges comparison. Bruce broke entirely new ground after he abandoned the Borscht Belt style that Rivers pretty much stayed with throughout her career.

Yes, perhaps apples and oranges, but the comparison for me is that Bruce's unique voice allowed the male comics who followed him the space to find their own voices; in a similar way, Rivers gave permission for the female comics that followed her to find their own voices. I don't think there could be a Roseanne Barr, Sarah Silverman, Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donell without the path that Rivers blazed. Remember that at that time, there were very few women American stand-ups--and even fewer solo acts. I can think only of Totie Fields as a solo contemporary. A few double acts, like Anne Meara and Elaine May, but really who else was doing what she did? Am I leaving anyone out?

You left out a major one- Phyllis Diller, without whom there may not have been a Joan Rivers.
But keep in mind that Lenny Bruce broke ground for everyone, male AND female. |
