So, I'm watching "The Great Race," a terrific comedy with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk.

At a key moment, while they're stopped for a blizzard, Leslie (Curtis) suggests he and Maggie (Wood) share a blanket to conserve warmth (it was Natalie Wood, who wouldn't?) He then pops open a champagne and explains to Maggie; "One puts alcohol into the autoMObile (that's not a typo, Curtis decided that was how Leslie would say "automobile" throughout the entire picture) to keep it from freezing." Then Professor Fate (Lemmon) and his minion Max (Falk) fall through the roof and have to share the blanket and champagne.

I've seen this before in movies and tv where the characters seem to think drinking alcohol will keep them warm in a freezing environment. In fact (and if I'm wrong, please correct me) alcohol tricks the body into THINKING it's warmer so it starts flushing out the "excess" heat.

Can anyone else out there think of something they've seen in movies and television given as a "fact" that's clearly wrong? No "one-shots" please, something that's been used in several cases.

I don't think there's been a movie that involved high level chess players that didn't include a scene where two high-level players intently study a position for some time before one of them plays a one-move checkmate. I'm not sure what to compare that to for the non-chessplayers. It might be like a movie about FISM where one magician does a zombie ball routine and fools all the other magicians with it.

The movie's character gets it wrong here, not the movie itself.

Many people believe this "alcohol" fact which is wrong. Smile

Almost ALL Movies with Magicians and Mentalists in them get lots of their Magic/Mentalism facts wrong that it is to be expected.

Which is sad... Smile

Audible explosions in space.

A hypnotist's total and complete control over a person's actions.

In a gunfight, someone receives one or two non-fatal shots (to the shoulder or leg, say) and continues fighting. Furthermore, in what seems like the next day or two, he's as good as new.

The ease at which someone (even non-computer geeks) can break into someone else's (or even government) computers.

The "karate chop" to the neck, or a single blow to the head with some object in order to render somebody momentarily unconscious.

Speaking of westerns and gunfights. I've never seen a western where gunshots sound like gunshots. A gunshot is more like a staccato bark or loud pop than the lengthened sound that Foley editors add to it.

Or how about when someone gets hit with a shotgun blast that causes him to fly backwards. In real life, the victim just drops.

Here's an example I remembered. That's George Plimpton taking the blast. I saw a behind the scenes thing that showed how he was attached to wires that jerked him back into the wall.

I'm somewhat surprised that none of our lawyers have mentioned the ubiquitous "one phone call" allowed to those under arrest.

Those under arrest are allowed access to counsel, but not merely one phone call.

Or any explosion caused by dynamite (nitroglycerine) or C4 that produces a ball of fire; high explosives produce enormous volumes of gas, but the gas isn't burning.

In the movie "12 O'clock High" they strived to be as realistic as possible. But they did end up adding noise from the German fighters attacking the bombers to add dramatic effect. In real life you couldn't hear other aircraft due to noise, distance, altitude.

When General Curtis LeMay (reported to be a main inspiration of the film) he congratulated the director on his realism.

Movie snow looks little like real snow.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

This may well be people's expectations. I remember the first couple of episodes of "Star Trek," the ship shoots by without making a noise. Roddenberry decided it was "dead" and added a "woosh" sound even though that would never happen in real life.

In which case, everything else could also be deemed to be done because of "people's expectations". Smile
