Richard Osterlind and Bob Cassidy LIVE: Sunday Sep 14th @7:00pm Eastern. (Penguin LIVE)
Two living legends meet to share their mind-blowing effects, their wisdom, and their wild stories. SUPPORT LIVE MAGIC http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4602 What will they teach? In this dual Osterlind/Cassidy lecture, Richard and Bob will cover a lot of ground, both theoretical and practical. They'll be telling quite a few stories as well. Richard Osterlind will be talking about his “roots” and those effects with which he began his career. Some of the items he plans to demonstrate and explain are: Magic vs. Mentalism Slate Immortality Tervil Newspaper Test Par Optic Vision Syd Bergson Center Tear Al Mann’s Azonic Force Notaria All of these will show Richard’s latest updates. Bob Cassidy is a repository of wisdom and this lecture will be packed with usable, real-world information that will resonate with magician and mentalist alike. Bob plans on demonstrating various updates, angles, and variations on… His classic Diary Effect The Mentalist's Dictionary The White Dwarf The Name/Place routine And, a few of his favorite mental card routines. Bob offers solid routines, interesting theoretical observations and straight-shooting practical advice. Even if you don't perform any mentalism at all, you will still learn a tremendous amount from his approach and professional insights. Who are they? Richard Osterlind has been a top corporate performer for over 40 years. He has traveled around the world entertaining presidents, heads of state, foreign dignitaries, CEO executives, sports figures, newscasters and audiences from every walk of life. He has become a legend in the corporate world. Richard has also become known as one of the leading teachers of Magic and Mentalism. With 30 videos, over 20 books and hundreds of original effects to his credit, there is hardly a performer who has not been influenced by his work. His down-to-earth manner of performing, coupled with his original, audience-tested methods, has made him a favorite in the eyes of his peers. He has constantly shown his ability to take time-honored secrets and update them for the modern world and his instructional materials have probably made more money for mystery performers than any other living instructor. When asked if his ability is a gift granted to only a few, Bob Cassidy will just shake his head and smile. He knows only too well that it took many years of hard work to develop the skills which seem to come to him so naturally on stage. While serving in the United States Navy as a communications specialist, he developed an act in which he displayed his virtually photographic memory and a remarkable sense of intuition. It was during this time that he began an in-depth study of the powers of the mind which led to the creation of the mentalism demonstrations he presents today. He began performing semi-professionally as a mentalist, stage mind-reader, and hypnotist in 1972. His first major gig was performing for Holland America Cruises, where he honed his skills and introduced entirely new concepts to the art of mentalism. Two hundred cruises later he would write three books on the principles he developed during this period of his performing career. He has since published and recorded a long list of works on Mentalism and the related arts. Bob co-founded the Psychic Entertainers Association in 1978, served as its president (1982-83), and was editor of its journal, “Vibrations,” through 1982. He was elected to honorary life membership in 1988 and was the first mentalist to be awarded its “Award for Creativity in Psychic Entertainment” in 1996. In 2011, Bob was the recipient of the Psychic Entertainers Association Dunninger Award, presented for distinguished professionalism in the performance of mentalism. In 2013, Bob was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at MINDvention in Las Vegas. |

Of course we will most likely cover a LOT of things not even mentioned in the promo. We may even argue!

Although Bob and I have known each other for a lot of years, we really worked in different areas of the country and never really came into contact much. We both come from the same era and we both love mentalism, so I suspect our views will be more alike than not. That is not to say we don't have different takes on some things, but that is how it should be.
As far as the performance lists , we were asked to submit a general description of what we were going to do. I guess this is standard, but we both tend to feel that viewers would rather see us interacting with each other rather than "Bob does something - Richard does something". I don't think either Bob or I feel we have to play by the rules! I'm sure we will all have a great time and it will be a memorable evening. |

Richard discusses this at length in his new book. I don't completely agree but his reasoning I can't help but respect and ponder.

I will talk about this further in the lecture, but my main point is this:
In order to survive in the real world, doing shows for real people (not at magic conventions) to support himself and his family, a performer has to develop a reputation/legend so that he will continuously get new bookings. That reputation should only grow after the performance when people later ponder what they have seen and, if anything, exaggerate the magnitude of the performance. Anything that can detract from that, such as audience members later finding out that people were secretly approached before the show, or that what appeared to happen to the person on stage is not truly what they experienced, can only hurt the mentalist. Rest assured, they WILL talk. If the audience is somewhat dissatisfied AFTER the show, that is disastrous. Instead of the performer’s prestige growing, it lessons or is even destroyed. This might get by in a bar situation, where the performer is working for a small fee or even for free, but the higher paying the show is, the more this can turn on the performer. If a meeting planner has paid thousands of dollars for an entertainer, then experiences any type of dissatisfaction from the client afterwards, they will not be rebooking that person. We once had a fill-in mentalist work when I was already booked for a date. The audience thought he was amazing, but 2 days later, when they found out he talked to people on the way back from the mens' room, they weren't so happy. Needless to say, my manager never hired him again. Let me tell you, most of what I see being touted today as some new and revolutionary approach to mentalism is not very new at all. Dual reality, hidden pre-show work and so many other ideas have been around forever. There is a reason you don't seen real working pros using this type of approach. |

Yes. This will be a good subject to discuss. I HAVE occasionally used these techniques, but I think it's important to understand the contexts in which I've used them. (None involved a risk that people would talk afterwards.) I'll also be talking about the difference between stooges, instant stooges, confederates and secret assistants.
I also imagine that Richard and I, apart from sharing information and stories, will also be alternately be interviewing each other. Hopefully this will result in something we can have a heated debated about in order to stir up some excitement. If that doesn't work, we can always sing Frankie Vallee and the Four Seasons greatest hits. |

Richard, I'm not sure I agree with you.
Performers like Derren Brown and Luke Jermay use DR and/or Pre Show. They both have superb reputations in their show.. and afterwards. |

One thing I will say here. From my earliest days in mentalism, it has given me incredible joy to walk up on a stage, anytime and anyplace, without any previous contact with the audience, with no outside assistants and to bring great mystery and wonderment to my audience that I don't have to worry will be ruined after I leave. Why would I ever want to do anything that took away from that? It certainly is not because I am lacking in strong effects!

I think DR and PS can be used without it affecting your reputation in a negative way, it's just up to how you use it.
It's like saying n*** wr****s are **** because I can't use one. (this is not an attack on anybody, just pointing out that these methods can work both close-up and on stage very well if done right)
Reader discretion is advised.
