Outstanding! (That's another one that used to drive me nuts. It's often used as a substitute for "awesome" as a response to such statements as "Here is your hamburger.")

Don't forget 'Excellent'. We can thank Bill and Ted for that.

Excellent! Yes, right on!
We used "wicked" a lot in New Jersey, too, when I was growing up. (Which I'm not quite done with yet.) |

I've just written a new monologue for my act based on the conversation in this thread. Thank you all for helping out! (Aren't I sneaky?)

In Germany, something really wonderful produces the exclamation, "geil!" The literal translation is "in heat". The looser translation is "horny".

I picked up a movie on amazon the other day - "Mystic Circle Murder," which was an indie made in 1939 and "starred" Bess Houdini. Well, she was only in the movie at the start and the very end and had about four lines. Anyway, it was probably the most cliche-ridden movie I've ever seen, but what made me think of it was the use of "swell" several times.
Swell!

Yes. "Swell" seems to have gone the way of "Gee whiz" and "Gosh."
Another word that you don't see used much any more is the superfluous "Why," as in, "Why, I was going to the store the other day," rather than "I was going to the store the other day." That was big around the same time as "Swell" and is still used by some very old folks. Why, I was just using it the other day! Kind of a filler like "you know." But don't like get me like going about "like," you know? Swell. |

"Awful" was once a synonym for "awesome." It literally meant something that fills you with awe.
So imagine just using "awful" in that sense to see what happens: "And what's your name?" "Brenda." "Awful! How about giving it up for Brenda as she comes to the stage? That's awful!" [Brenda removes shirt again] "Awful!" |
