Yes, pretty shocking about the revamped version of The Banana Splits because I remember watching that series back in the day. Thanks, Jonathan, for keeping us posted. While we're at it about those Saturday morning shows I remember watching Land of the Lost and Space Ghost and also the Impossibles. So you could say the Pixel movies The Impossibles "stole" that name from the 1960s series. Interesting that the 1960s series included a superhero called Hydro-man because he could transform into actual water and thereby infiltrate a building by flowing through the pipes. Interesting because way back in the Golden Age of comic books in the 1940s there was already a superhero called Hydro man with the same superpower.
How I found out about Hydro man was when I was recently browsing at Barnes & Noble shop when I ran across a hardback book about weirdest heroes. The weirdest one in that book was "the Hand," a literal disembodied hand that floats through the air and does heroic deeds. Its origin was not included (as compared to the other superheroes) so I think that maybe the creator did not even write one.. |

Just watched the 2nd episode of the 3rd season of "Jessica Jones" and I realized what the problem is with this show. First of all, I like the show; let's make that clear. This seems to be one area where DC has Marvel beat really badly. Jessica can fly, but rarely does as she lacks control. Fine. She has Super Strength, which she uses. Really? Super Strength? I've seen better special effects for super strength on the Six Million Dollar Man, and that was like 40 years ago with no CGI or green screen. C'mon Marvel, yes it is the last season, but I expect a quality product from you and I think everybody else does too!

When Cliff mentioned Jessica's lack of control at flight it reminded me of an old issue of Superboy where he was trying to learn how to fly for the first time so he needed Pa Kent's help. What they did was rig up a box kite, the kite with the hollow box shape open at both ends. Superboy would then lay down on his stomach in it while Pa Kent guided it from the ground and by extension helping Superboy to learn.
What's odd is I remember an advertisement of that story which misleadingly showed Superboy having balloons tied to all 4 of his limbs to help him learn. What's odd is that particular scene never appeared in the original-story at all. |

I didn't like the trailer much. I hope I like the movie.
My hope is they do not try to give the Joker an origin story. Most of the mystique of the character is not having one.

I don't keep up with any of the movies, but from my teen-age days, didn't the Joker fall in a vat of acid?

Well, maybe a little bit with teases of Thanos during certain movies. It was just a shared universe where things connected. I actually think that's the 'secret sauce' that makes Marvel so fascinating. And as far as you not sitting through another 13 movie story arch, I don't believe you Danny. First, if there IS another long arch, you probably won't realize it and second, I think you'll have a hard time NOT going to see how well Marvel reboots Fantastic Four or introduces new Super Heroes. Just my opinion. |

I thought I recalled the acid vat as part of the DC Bob Kane Batman comic books from the 50s/60s, aside from any of the movies. Am I remembering correctly or superimposing my memory of the first Batman movie?

I know what Rockwall means when he said he used get irritated at all the DC crossovers. But when it was done very sparingly, it was very good. Especially when Zatanna used to be on the Quest for her missing Father so she used to make unannounced surprise appearances in various comics. All those surprise appearances were part of her continuing quest. At that time it was quite a novelty and it worked.
Another approach that was done sparingly at the time was when a story continued for two issues. It was usually when the Justice League and Justice Society had Annual team ups. But nowadays the current comics leave me cold because there's No such thing as a single stand-alone issue. The stories go on for not only two issues but so many issues that it becomes ad nauseum. During the 1960's you really got your money's worth because you got a complete story in one issue. In fact, there were usually two stories per issue. |

Landmark is remembering correctly. It was the first appearance of the red hood and he was a fairly generic Batman foe until it was revealed at the end that the Joker had been the red hood and fell in the acid. That story was unimpressive. The retelling in the Killing Joke was an amazing bit of comic history.

I thought the 60s/70s DC comics crossovers were fun. When DC launched the Vertigo line and exploratory titles like The Filth (see issue 3*) it was clear they were aimed at older readers. About 1985 - the imported 2000AD were adopted and by 1986 Sandman, V or Vendetta, Swamp Thing, and the start of The Watchmen series signaled the end of "nice" as the default for stories. Early signals included the Ras Al Guhl Batman stories, and in hindsight maybe also the Kirby O. M. A. C. corporate /U. N. themed conflict where the good guys had to wear masks to hide their ethnicity.
Yeah I miss those old stories before DC tried to address ethnic or drug issues. *Some characters have been visiting the 2D worlds of classic comics and they even brought back their version of superman. Worth having a look.

News this week of Neil Gaiman's Sandman getting a series. If they can cast the show and resist the candystore of its mythology they could have several seasons of fun storytelling. Dream could be gaunt, sullen and softspoken but casting the rest of the characters will make or break the show. Desire needs to be about desire. Destruction needs to stay offscreen till the story gets there. Despair, Delight/Delirium, and Death are critical casting. Lucian, the Corinthian, and Leta Hall could he the backbone of the show. Whether they bring in an appropriate Lucifer and Loki are also critical.
About like casting the harry potter movies... an ensemble but the audience does not get to meet them all on the first episode or first season. More in 2020

Sandman could launch a large cast of characters into weekly episode TV with their stories - easily.
And every year could have a "cereal convention" till they get to that part of the Doll's House story... Meanwhile in realtime comicbook publications today ... https://panelwiseblog.wordpress.com/anno......tations/ There's one issue left in the story if you want to read it from the beginning before we see what happens next.

Saw Spider-man Far From Home Yesterday. Good movie. My Daughter and I enjoyed it. A couple of great action scenes. No spoilers here, but the film did a good job of letting us know that the MCU still exists.

I wasn't that impressed with it.
No spoiler but why bother having him bitten by a spider if he is going to sport Stark Tech? Pretty much anyone can be Spiderman. It is just Iron Man with webs.
