Anyone have both of these items? If a Dean's Box could fit inside a Lubor's Gift box, that might be kinda cool. But then again, maybe the weight of the Dean's Box would make the Lubor's Gift a little unwieldy, I don't know. Can someone shed some light on this?

It would be easier to cut some holes in the sides of one (or both) of the Gift Boxes and use that box to perform the linking ropes, which is really just a rope effect and does not require a box at all, but the box takes the heat off the method. In my "Sefalaljia Revisited" from The Wizards' Journal #10, I show how this is done with a Dollar Store plastic crate, and in "Blendo Ropes" from The Wizards' Journal #16, Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki shows how the linking ropes is done without any box at all using Paul Curry's original method. Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki does it again using a handkerchief instead of a box, for his "Babushka of Baba Yaga" found in the Wizards' Journal #21. So learn to do the rope effect and then decide if you want to combine it with Lubor's Gift Box or not.

Dean’s Box is much too late to fit in the Lubor’s Gift boxes I think.

Interesting suggestion, JIm, but I'd hate to alter that pretty Lubor's Gift box. I have a Dean's Box, by the way, and feel like the box adds a nice bit of theatricality to the Paul Curry effect (although that one is great in an impromptu situation). Sounds like the Dean's Box is too big for the Lubor's Gift, though...

The deans box will fit in Lubor's Gift Boxes. But only after putting it through a wood chipper
The Dean's Box is to large to fit in it otherwise. You could however fit the ropes and ring in the Gift box.

I like Payne's idea (the ropes and ring in the box thing, not the wood chipper thing.) The other alternative would be to make your own Luber-style box to fit your Dean's Box, but the Dean's Box has some weight to it, so the handling could be clumsy. Part of me is fascinated by the concept of the DB inside the Gift Box, and the other part of me thinks you're combining two really excellent effects to create one mediocre one.

But if the Luber box is just a container for the prop, and not part of the routine, it could make a brief yet interesting transition piece to the next routine. However, I think it would be necessary for the luber box to stand apart from the other routine or, as you said, both may suffer. In my opinion, the luber box doesn't feel like a stand alone routine, but perhaps would work best as a fascinating interlude. I don't have one, just my thoughts on the piece. |
