Stumbled across a reference to the deutero-Pauline letters. I know the Pauline letters--they're the letters from Paul, right? Turns out that the deutero-Pauline are the letters to the Colossians, Thessalonians and Ephesians, and these are generally believed not to have been written by Paul, but by one or more imitators.
Well this was pretty pleasing to learn. But what does "deutero" mean? Ah, here's the good part. It's Greek for "second". These are the "second letters from Paul". And of course, the Deuteronomy is the second set of Mosaic laws. ("Nomos" is law.) I suspect most won't care, but this is the most fun new word/phrase I've learned in a long time. I am happy.

Don't forget deuterium -- an isotope of hydrogen with an atomic weight of ~2. It's nucleus -- called a deuteron -- is one proton and one neutron.

When our kids were young, their teachers encouraged the students to agree on a code word with their parents, to avoid the possibility that a stranger could pick up a child from school: if they didn't know the child's code word, they weren't going to get custody.
Our word was widdershins. (For those unfamiliar with its meaning: it's the opposite of deasil.) |
