I like the idea of being able to carry around only one deck of cards and being able to entertain people with it at any time.

Richard Turner also does fantastic things with coins...he does coin rolls with 8 coins in one hand...however, I'm not sure how much coin work is in one of his shows.

Simon Lovell worked pretty much only with cards for quite some time. Jason England and Steve Forte are two others. I was fortunate enough to spend some time with Joe Barry, and he is cards only as well. I believe Benjamin Earl is another card only man.
This is the profile of Comedian + Magician Erik Tait. A self-promoting sleight of hand artist who thinks he is the cat's meow.

Aside from the mentioned, Derek DelGaudio and Helder Guimarães - their hit show Nothing to Hide was all cards. To be honest I almost didn't even notice when I watched it.

You can certainly entertain with just a deck of cards but I think your reason for doing so should be more than just your love of cards and practicality. Ortiz presents himself as a card cheating expert for instance, and talks about the difficult sleight of hand involved. Despite card magic being my least favourite discipline to perform, I really enjoyed watching Ortiz as his routine structure is incredible.
I personally like to do magic with anything, whether that be "organic" magic with everyday objects, or the classics such as the linking rings. What you choose to perform affects the way the audience perceives you. Ortiz would look strange getting out some linking rings as it would be incongruent. I personally would rather do a gig with no cards rather than all cards because I think it suits me better, so think about what would suit you. |

Of course if your skill set; performance; showmanship and stage personality is the same level of the names mentioned, then the answer is yes.
The answer would be yes for any act. Vaudeville, it was mostly single acts. After the golden age of magic when stage magic venue was gone magicians performed primarily in night clubs and did a single "act". Cigarette acts; cocktail/drink acts; mentalist acts. It has been done in the real world and performers of all disciplines have thrived. The real question should be, can a hobbyist entertain with just card magic? From what I witness, the answer is NO! Most hobbyist magicians SUCK! Four hours of boring variations of pick-a-card, would put any lay person into a coma. Don’t make the same mistake most hobbyist do. |

I saw a live act in which he presented the invisible deck, some amazing effects with the mnemonica, El cochecito (the one with the toy car), and one of the most impressive ambitious card routines I've ever seen. Just cards, and a toy car used to do a card effect. He can and have done terrific stuff other than cards. But he also can and does entertain an audience with just cards for 45 minutes. |

"Do you do anything besides card tricks?"
If one is so good as to not have the above question asked, then yes. Otherwise get back to rehearsing with a video camera. |

I think that it takes a very special talent to entertain with just a deck.
Unless you're an extremely talented entertainer, you'll find me asleep after your 3rd card trick. |

We all sat in a room in front of his table and he did his card thing. It was quite different than just magic. He is very skilled and can talk and do miracles at the same time with a deck of cards, I'd say as good as any of the best that ever did it. Real smart guy and extremely clever with a "Have cards, will travel" sort of air about him. There must've been at least 20 people in there, among them other greats (and a few greats to come), like David Roth, Dr. Michael Rubinstein(?), young Eric Jones and several others. Not sure how just a bevy of smart card tricks can hold an audience like that, but it did…I was there, and in awe of what this guy could do with a deck of cards, seemingly so easy, casually, and confidently. *Maybe not in the league with Darwin Ortiz, but Bill Malone is also quite good with cards, but he also does some other good closeup magic as well. Got to sit right up close (Next to him actually) as well down at his club in Boca Raton, FL., years back as well. Another consummate pro, and quite amazing as well.

While there are many only-cards performers, everyone I've seen have dabbled in other forms of close up magic particularly to gain insight on different ways to handle objects and managing attention. This is especially true for coin magic and cups & balls.
Temariz & Levend did do none-card stuff, as well as many others. |

I think the big problems if only you do card magic is that you get bad habit. Magician takes so-so trick and then puts BIG presenting on it and thinks it is BIG miracle because of presenting. At same time as average cardmagic presenter do so-so trick another average magic can do WHOLE cup and ball routine or whole coin routine or whole rope routine.
Also if alwaysusing the cards for presenting magic then soon people think it is not magic that is the hero, but cards that is the hero. It is not magic but magic "simulation" using card. Yes all magic is magic "simulation" but if always using one prop then it is more obvious to audience. If you can etnertaining well with cards then ok, but if you take same entertaining skills to broader magic I think things improve for you. Usually |

As mentioned there are many magicians out there that have built great reputations and earned a good living by performing just card magic but why limit yourself ?
