I thought the final loads were way too obvious.

Yeah, but apparently not many others did!

Even my wife commented on how clumsy the steals were.

Hurray for her.
Judges and voters apparently loved the act, which must have counted for more... |

These sort of programme always seem to surprise me, especially Britain's got talent. Some go through who can only described as rediculous, while others who are quite good get voted off.

It looked to me like the table wasn't the right height for him. I wonder if there were constraints on his table/arrangement/camera positions that forced him into an unusual loading position.

You could be right, who knows, but it did look terrible.

Watch out George, this guy is an idol on the Café presently.

I am absolutely delighted that he won, but if I think the steals were not the best I am entitled to say so surely.

It was interesting to notice that he won with close-up tricks and routines. There have been many great magicians doing great illusions but haven't won.

My wife loved Mat and his personality as did I. She did say to me how she does not enjoy the big box tricks, says they are boring.
I have, over the years watched many and she is right. Some Magicians get to caught up in their trick to be able to relate to the audience. I am also surprised at the few who are negitve about Mat. This is a good thing for magic and magicians everywhere, especially for a new crop of young people to take up the Art and emulate Mat, nothing wrong with that. John

Hi Kabbalah!
I just watched the video (In the past, I've watched one or two of the AGT shows, and wasn't overly impressed--mainly with the judges's attitudes. I am ecstatic that a "thimblerigger" won! I don't do the Cx & Bs, but I have had the privilege of seeing some of the best performers. Knowing the basic routines and what to watch for, it wasn't especially difficult to catch the loads. 55Hudson perhaps has the answer. George is certainly not a First o' May, He has said that he,too, is absolutely delighted that a magician won. Knowing George, fairly well, I don't think that he is nit picking. He, IMHO, is just stating his HO. I would suggest that we wait and see whet young Mat Franco says.

Thanks Dick. I will repeat that I am delighted he won. All the comments about his personality etc. are completely valid and I too found him a very likeable character.
I was simply saying that for whatever reason the steals were very noticeable, sorry if I upset anyone as that was not my intention at all.

Sorry, I am not a fan of this young man.
He also screwed up his ACR in the final performance.

Thanks for sharing that clip.
I hate these kinds of programmes, especially when you learn about the 'input' the studios have (try reading one of their contracts, the thickness of a phone-book). Many performers in the UK withdrew rather than agree to this. Glad a magician won and that he used a routine persnalised to his immediate audience. Hope this helps magic to gain in popularity but without the old-style poetry. The loads were awkward, did his servante move? It Would be interesting to know who trained him in the routine? and why he decided not to sit or wear a pouch? And of course what was the opposition like? In the UK, large illusions seemed to have worked for one show, but follow-up routines were generally weaker.

The structure of his routines and some technical bits, could definately be a lot better.
But Mat wonder Because of his presentations and likeability. And that my friends, is much more important than the above. A lot of young magicians could learn from that |

Hallelujah! Magic-Daniel!
You I do believe you've "got it" I've only seen the video on this thread. Mat's bright smile lit up the stage for me. He was immediately likable! He seemed IMO, confident. He works a bit fast, but that may have been necessitated by the producers. Yes,I agree Daniel, structure could be improved, and a few of the technicals, too, but, again IMO, his smile and bright pesonality "put him across"! And, ABSOLUTELY! --A lot of young guys could learn from this!

The cups and ball performance showed that he was a very good entertainer. We can pick a part things he did that were not perfect, but the overall peformance was strong. Performing with bright lights in your face and hypercritical narcissitic judges looking for mistakes takes a lot of nerve, poise, and talent. I also enjoyed seeing someone else do the cups with rhyming patter since that is how I do it.
