It was certainly a fine demonstration of what can be achieved by reading. Not necessarily Harry's book.
It's always highly informative to read TV blogs after these shows are screened-or even during. It gives a real insight into audience's immediate assumptions. And they are not always as naive as we think! |

Lol.
I'd like to peruse the TV blogs -- any links? It would be fascinating. |

I think we should refrain from discussing methods here.

Yeah I defiantly think people shouldn't deconstruct the show and the techniques employed openly here, talk about it downstairs.

Or how about enjoy the show, but let it be. There is no reason to deconstruct anything.

(dd123, thanks for your response and suggestion though I have been fortunate to be familiar with DB's work and books since shortly after his TV specials began and didn't mean to imply I wasn't) Part of my wanting to "confirm" my curiosity relates to wondering why no mentalist since maybe (MAYBE) Kreskin in the 70s has achieved anywhere near a similar level of recognition in the USA. Marc Salem once seemed poised to do so, but, as much as I like the man and his work, only once or twice have I encountered a layman who knows of him (and in each instance it related to his performing for Jewish organizations they were members of) even after the 60 Minutes profile. What is up with this? Why hasn't ANY mentalist achieved this level of fame in America for so long? We certainly have some equally talented performers here. Some things just make you go "hmm..." |

I've actually wondered this exact same thing Bill.

I think reality tv and shows like AGT have had a role to play in the lack of any mentalism taking off in the US. We also generally don't go to the theater anymore (no, movie cinemas are not theaters). So, I think it's the result of a lot of little things about US culture that make it difficult.

HL's method is much more easy to remember, and allows you to remember many more 'numbers'. No prizes for guessing which book I am reading at the moment! Is this really something that should be discussed 'downstairs'? I have been involved in long conversations about this subject on this very forum, with Harry and Bob both involved. I don't feel that this is a trade secret as such, but if the general feeling is that it is so, then I apologise and will discuss no more! Regards, Duncan. |

I enjoyed the show and thought it was quite funny as we'll. I liked the way he made his mediumship both educational and entertaining. Also his use of hypnosis added to the premise of the power of the mind.
This show was good but not great for me, but that's only because he has set the bar so high. |

I don't think this show played anywhere near as well on screen as it did live. I think that may partly due to the nature of the production itself. It was more personal and intimate, and felt that way to the audience in the theatre. Much more than previous shows it felt that Derren was addressing our personal identities, free from props and razzamatazz. It actually felt closer to the more personal, dare I say "emotional" close up that has grown in popularity in the last decade. This was somewhat lost on TV, I felt.
I do feel the finale was a little weak, though. And something was amiss with the structure. It is a shame Derren and Andy didn't choose to follow the personal approach to its logical conclusion: follow Derren's path through life. I think it may have been stronger to start (after the wonderful opening "we are all trapped in our own heads" speech which was beautiful in its simplicity of statement and staging ) with the childhood "dick brain" section, move onto the cards and ACAAN to illustrate his early years in magic, move onto more traditional name, number, picture mentalism of his Mind Control years then switch to his investigation and debunking of sham faith healers, psychics etc. he then could have ended with a Berglas style, multi-phase, mass-participation effect which proved, conclusively, that though we are all trapped in our own heads we are all fundamentally, and beautifully, the same. I think that would have been a very entertaining evening of theatre. Still, he remains head and shoulders above the competition both in presentation and performance. |
