It seems that some effects are destined to be classics ab initio. Such is the case with the Princess card trick. But this is a two edged sword, because, unfortunately, many of those same effects spawn variation upon variation, ad nauseum, until the effect ends up being so watered down, that it is hardly recognizable as a former shadow of itself, or it may become to the point of exposure, where every bodies brother and their uncle Harry knows it.
I am happy to report that this is not the case with Gordon Bean's and Larry Jenning's "New Limited Edition" These two men have taken an allready outstanding effect, and actually made it better. So much so, that those who own the original version would be doing well to purchase this new version. The effect includes a startling new climax with additional, specially printed cards, the original classic routine, and bonus ideas from none other than Max Maven and Eugene Burger. The effect: You display a small fan of six different cards, and the spectator is asked to merely think of one of the cards. Now, as the spectator concentrates on the card in his head, one of several things occur, depending on which ending you elect to perform from the instruction book. One possible outcome: The spectators card begins to FADE away. It is actually seen to have a pale ghost like appearance in the fan. Finally it turns totally white on both sides, and proves to be the thought of card! A second option is this: After the spectator mentally selects a card, he is asked to imagine a corner torn from the card. The magician reveals that one corner is actually torn off of one card, which card goes blank, and turns out to be the mental selection. To top that, the spectator mentally sends the torn corner into a card box, where it mysteriously rematerializes! And if that is not enough, the booklet also details Max Maven's routine, and Eugene Burger's also. This effect can be mastered in a short time, and the hardest part is deciding which of the many included routines to use first. I was like the proverbial "kid in a candy store", but eventually I will master all of the routines, and you may be enticed to do so also. This routine has so much going for it, that I can't list everything here, but I'll say this: It takes up little space for such a powerful effect. The reset is a snap. No sleights are needed. You actually seem to have read the spectators mind. It makes a quick, but memorable impression. The new added climax adds a visual dimension to the effect. The added routines by Maven and Burger make this an exceptional value. The instruction booklet is first class, beautifully printed, easy to read and follow, and lavishly filled with crisp clear photographs. First class quality all the way Nothing spared in the way of expense and efforts to make this an easy to read and learn undeniable miracle. I think that those new to magic as well as veterans of the magic arts will all find a place for this gorgeous effect in their perfomance reportoire. Oh, did I mention that Harry Anderson performed the original version on network T.V.? The venue this might be used in include strolling, close-up, perhaps parlour and restaurant, and others. I feel your spectators will love you for showing them this great piece of magic, and I recomend it without reservation. In short, I think the effect is simple, short, sweet, and elegant. It says much with very little. Kudos to Gordon and Larry for this improved, fabulous effect! This high quality Magic Lab item is rated four ****stars, and you can find it at Hank Lee's magic Factory on this site. Just click on the banner!

I have a problem with this new version. In the old version you could perform it on TV, for millions of people, or for a group of 20, or one on one, and EVERYONE had the magic happen to them. With this new version, because you make the index corner reappear, you can now only do this effect for one person. Sure others can watch, but they can't participate as they could have with the original version. I feel that makes this version inferior to the original.

Most of the users on this forum are not on T.V. and probably never will be. Most of us perform one on one. For these people the effect suits the need in a nice manner.

Well as dpe666 pointed it out, does the first option of the NEW limited edition can be done to many people at the same time like the original edition ?
I personally think that the second option is just too much...I don't think it's the number of punches that make an effect really good.

But in the old one the spectators cannot say to each other what card they have thought of, right?

You can "experiment",;you can play around and be creative; you have that wonderful word _"versatility" You are not limited to just one ending: you can "do your own thing". You can pick and choose. Now that's not a bad thing is it? Of course I understand their are some folks in this world who don't like making decisions. They want everythiong spelled out for them. But I'm guessing that you are not that kind of person. Just a guess. Quote:

I've used the original "Limited Edition" for years, but the problem with the effect, even the original "Prince's Card Trick" (later corrupted to "Princess Card Trick,"), is that if done with multiple spectators thinking of cards, they could compare notes afterwards and suss out the method. this is why I was horrified to see Harry Anderson do it on US national TV.
So I always do it for one person only. I save it for people dining alone who ask to see magic. And I tell them, truthfully, that this is something special that I don't do for just anyone. It makes them feel special, and that's what it's all about. Having read the comments and reviews here, I will definitely buy the new one, if only to have alternate endings available in case someone asks me to show it to a friend. Thanks, Eric |

Eric,I think the option of multiple endings is what maked this a great value. And yes, spectators can get together and use process of elimination to figure out the method. Although when I saw the Harry Anderson special, their were different people in the room, and instead of figuring it out, they were all amazed that their card dissapeared, and that the next persons card dissapeared, and the next persons, ...etc., etc., so what I'm saying is that instead of tipping them off to the method, it just amazed them all the more!

You can also do the original method as it comes with the cards needed for that also.

I have to agree that I would only allow ONE spectator to mentally select a card from the spread, and this new edition adds another layer of mystery to make a good trick even better!

While daffydoug and I disagree on Gordon's other routine Temptation, I will agree with him on this one. I like the new version, especially the new addition where you can show the back of the card in the "partially" gone state. Basically you can see the back design as it is fading away. I think it's a nice touch. And yes, you can still do the original version as well.
I will add that of Gordon's three new tricks, I think Joker Joker is the best and the most fun to play with. I really enjoy it even though it is very simple . |

Your last post brings out a very interesting point. It seems that people can hardly agree on what makes an effect either good or bad.
Case in point, Joker Joker. I don't own the effect, but I never purchased it because I read Michael Close's review in Magic, or Genii, can't remember which. Anyway, the effect that you really like was given a poor rating by Michael Close. Just goes to show. Their is no accounting for taste. And people can seldom agree.

I like this trick so I bought it I just got it yesterday I have not tried it on anyone so I will not do a review, theirs not a whole lot to say, just about everything been said here, there are some thing I need to say, I have played around with it a little, basically the trick is real easy to do no skill needed other then fanning the 6 cards, the first couple of thing I'm going to say is about the original or the limited edition, about fanning the cards if you fan the cards to much you might give away how the trick is done and the second one is, if you do the first part of the routine you need to watch your angles if someone is on either side of you or in back of you they won't find out how the trick is done but will see something that you don't want him or her to see, the good new is, there 3 additional special printed cards on top of the 6 original specially printed cards 1 of the cards out of the 3 additional cards can be used to solve the angle problem but the trick won’t have as good of impact as to the blank card. As to the Instructional booklet, parts of the Eugene Burger Routine I think is poorly explain, and it seem some parts of the routine are missing, some parts I understand and some I don’t.
Posted: May 11, 2005 5:28pm ------------------------------------------------------------------------- You probably can get a way with it by showing two spectators just don’t show the set of cards to the spectators at the same time, and if there both select different cards that’s ok both the spectators are probably going to talk about it afterwards, there going to say to each other what was your select card, one spectator will probably say my select card turn into a blank card and the other spectator will say mind to, that’s strange there was only one blank card in the set and probably leave it at that, and if you get really lucky and both spectators select the same card then that’s all the better for you. |

Great to see all the discussion about the effect. My favorite part of performing the new version is the fact that if somebody else announces they've thought of a card, and it's different, you can reproduce that corner as well. Really plays well. (In both the original and the new instructions I did include my strategy for making sure that no one looks at more than one card.)
