What the hell is up with the use of the word organic when describing effects or methods?
Am I the only one confused and annoyed by its use?

It's management-speak.

It means that the performance of the effect seems natural in the environment, such as a spoon effect in a restaurant setting or the performance of a mental effect when the conversation has been about paranormal experiences or using a Water Bottle instead of a glass pitcher at a picnic.
I think I understand "organic" in this context and support the use of the term. I've never heard the term organic with regard to method. I'd take it to mean that the actions are supported by the situation like putting something in your left hand so that you can check your right pocket but I think there are better ways to say that. If someone said they were using an organic method I'd be in the dark. I hope they don't mean using spit for adhesion. LOL It would be great if people would define their terms or point to a source so we could all learn as we go. If we don't agree on terms we start to take the meaning from context for lack of a definition and we don't all guess right. This can make for unintended misunderstandings. Interesting question Kabbalah. I hope there are better answers coming. -Mary Mowder |

It's one of my pet peeves that I've complained about for quite some time now. Basically, it seems to be just a popular word at the moment.

Acesover, I meant no offense.
Tom Cutts and I have been friends for many years. I was kidding but also wondering if my guess at what organic method meant was correct. Tom travels in circles where he may have heard this usage. Tom If you are feeling beat up, that was not my intent, just poor writing. -Mary |

Hey Mary,
I didn't feel beat up in the least. I knew exactly what you were meaning. Organic magic happens with objects naturally occurring in the environment it happens in. In terms of method, what you wrote Quote:

OK. My bad. Sorry to Tom and Mary. Some day I will learn to mind my own business. But I don't see it happening soon.

Impromptu can include any effect done spur of the moment.
Organic means a stronger connection to the objects or conversation present (even if you prompt that conversation). I would agree that good Magicians would usually choose what impromptu Magic to do based on the environment before the term organic was in common use though. -Mary Mowder |

I think "organic" has become a trendy cliche, right up there with "this is the closest thing to real mind reading!"
But I agree that "organic" and "impromptu" aren't synonyms. An effect can appear to be "natural" even if it's not impromptu. |
