This article which deconstructs the 10,000 hour expert practice theory, make a nice companion piece to the Foucault-Chomsky debate posted elsewhere. Particularly important I think is the distinction it makes between genetic differences across individuals and genetic differences across groups.

Color me completely unsurprised. Do people really still believe in the tabula rasa? Gross misreading of the Declaration of Independence, btw; that document asserts (purports to, anyway, women and minorities notwithstanding) that we're created equal in out rigs not our abilities.
The last paragraph is hilarious.
"Torture doesn't work" lol
Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

I don't know about hilarious, but I would agree there are a bunch of logical links missing in that final conclusion.
I think the larger issue is not so much tabula rasa, but as I indicated before the difference between "across individuals variation" and "across groups variation." As for the founders of the US, I think it would be a mistake to think that they weren't profoundly influenced by Locke's idea of the tabula rasa, although they evidently thought that what could be inscribed might be limited according to race and gender. I think Chomsky pointed out that the philosophy of behaviorism in its crudest form demands a tabula rasa. I certainly think that there are many people (almost all non-educators) who think or act as if teaching/learning is the process of inscribing on a blank slate.
