Hello Everyone!

Wish me luck this week my friends. I am working with a craftsman and engineer this week to recreate the recently discontinued Hand of Cleopatra. For years this clever effect, manufactured in Germany, has been sold at Stephen's Magic Emporium. Here it is in action:

Now, for ease of construction AND to add to the effect, I will be scaling this up. It will be approximately 6 inches high and made of wood. The symbols will be burned onto the side, the wood will be stained dark walnut and the whole thing lacquered over. The hand itself will be LIFE SIZED! I am going to make a gaffed mummy hand to increase the creepy factor. I may add some brass trim if I can finish it in time for a performance on the 10th of October.

I will be recording each step along the process and taking notes. I am hoping that the finished product will inspire one of the prop makers out there to reproduce this wonderful illusion. Construction begins on the 4th of October (tomorrow as I write this). I will post updated as much as I can without revealing the secret.

I still have, and use, my original Hand of Cleopatra that I purchased in a shop (the name of which escapes me) in north Houston, TX way back in 1983 or 84. I have always loved this piece. They demo'ed it to me and I had to have it...we all know that feeling.

I know Christian! That's one of the reasons I want to do this! Capricornian Tales is one of my favorite sources of inspiration for Bizarre Magic!

As of day 1 on the project, we hammered out the issues with creating a six sided (hexagonal) pyramid.

We will be using a 3/4" enclosed bearing set for the metal shaft that will support the main effect. There was some last minute debate about using wood for the sides of pyramid. There was some suggestion to use a mold and a make a pored brass hexagonal pyramid. Although part of me really liked this idea as it could look more "Ancient Egyptian", I am unfamiliar with how to do acid etching or how to age the prop effectively.

Now that we have all the materials, we begin construction tomorrow.

Are there any copyright issues? I love the "Hand" but I never buy unauthorized knock offs. It's just how I was raised and I can't shake it. I'm not sure what legal hoops you must jump through to sell these but you did do that right?

BTW ... loved this link with the reversible name and all ..but it didn't go anywhere...???

What ever became of this project? I am surprised that nobody has come out with a better variation of the Hand of Cleopatra.

Well, I ad issue getting the rights to do it. It was not too impossible to create, but I wasn't going to pursue making it if I could not get permission. C'est la vie.

My version would have been larger and have a mummy hand.

I have been wanting one that had a more evil look and this might just be it.

That is too bad. The basic workings have been incorporated into so many different effects. The Hand Of Cleopatra is not even available anymore.

If it were 50 years ago, I would be ok with it. But it only stopped production a few years ago and I think the family of the creator may still own the rights.

That is understandable. Good ethics on your part is commendable!

I'm not sure there is an ethical issue and certainly no copyright infringement here. Clearly if you produce the "Hand of Cleopatra" there is an issue but the principle is hardly owned by anyone.

I'm pretty sure "The Hand of" has already had one bizarre remake. It was a different kind of hand...
