Hello,
I am currently constructing a routine in which at some point I will would like to produce a finger ring without going to my pockets and was wondering whether anyone knows of a holdout for finger rings? I've done a general google search and a search on the Café but have drawn a blank. I could line a weak bulldog clip with velvet and use that but wanted to see what other solutions magicians have come up with (such as a carabiner that opens outwards if that makes sense). Thanks in advance |

You can make one with two small magnets and a 3"-4" piece of bias tape to match your clothes.
glue each mag in an end of the tape tube making sure the alignment is correct. Fold the tape in half so that the mags connect and affix a safety pin to the fold. A ring can be hung in the loop and release when pulled. A coin can be pinched between the mags if strong enough. When hung under your coat or sleeve you can easily and soundlessly remove the ring or coin I use neomags about 1/4" square and 1/64th thick polarized though the surfaces.

Boy I made this holdout up this week.. and is it terrific.. just what I have been looking for after a 3 month search and "help" from the boys.
I had a bulldog clip with magnets.. this gives me much more security.. ok so I got super powerful magnets... it takes some effort to release but I have security.. made three different versions.. will hold out some cards... looking to use this with coins next thank you thank you thank you Marty |

A large paperclip and a belt work for me in a pinch. Rotate the "outside" end of the clip outward, then clip it yo your belt wherever you want it or need it.

Roy Johnson of England seems to have the most practical and simplest hold out for his finger ring routine that use to be sold by Ken Brooke and more recently by Steven's Magic. Seems they are not currently listing it.

I actually use a small piece of invisible thread threaded through the ring and just place it where I can easily access. When I needed to retrieve the ring I just breaks off the thread as I bring the ring into play.

Another way is with a bobby pin and a safety pin under the edge of you coat. The bobby pin will hold the ring securely due to the rippled leg. Quick and simple.

I just attended a lecture by Jay Scott Berry. Jay has a routine with rings and a ribbon. His method of "holding" and "loading" the rings is flawless in my eyes. I intend to incorporate some of his moves in my show. I love his idea of start clean and end clean. Here is a link to his lecture, well worth the money. Even better in person if you get the opportunity.
