Google is touted by many as the best search engine because of its superior ranking system (or that's what Google says)
I guess this means that the answer you desire is nearer the top of the list. This may be true. the only problem for me is that folks assume that such ranking has anything to do with accuracy or truth -- or even relevance so, disturbed a bit by the modern tendency to say "Google it" rathe than admit you don't have an answer or are afraid to share it, I searched Google about "google" not only is that search filled with irrelevant references, the material that is presented about the origin of the word "google" is inaccurate, incomplete and even completely false. even worse, more refined searches on an idea like "google book" gets you further form the truth and closer. If I were still teaching an an organized school I might pose the challenge, "what is the relationship between the Wizard of Oz and 'google'?" given that NO search engine will provide the answer directly, but may be a tool one can use to discover the truth. if you have little success with "google" try another search engine like Yahoo. Why are the answers different? -- not in order but in factuality? then again, this may be a false clue -- meant to tease those who believe anything the find on the Internet.

Have you ever heard of Search Engine Optimization?
Basically it means that companies hire IT specialists whose job it is to make sure the company appears up front in Google. In turn, part of Google's business model is to sell tips to SEO companies. So nothing is accidental about what comes up first in Google. Most of the time it's because a company has paid--indirectly though it might be--to have their name pop up early and profitably. Google is a business, Ken. Didn't you know that? |

Oh man, don't know how I missed that. But of course it makes sense.

What can be found is not accurate. .................. the apparent fact that many people "believe" or accept the higher-up listings is not Google's problem, but, they are taking advantage of this intellectual laziness (or whatever) for profit -- such is the way of business. The problem is that they claim a superiority based on a ranking system not biased by profit. Another falsehood. but, that is not the problem I stated either. The problem is that the correct information cannot be easily found on ANY search engine

Ken, you are shockingly naive.
The "truth" has been a business since the beginning of civilization. You complain that Google supplies untruth. Like...politicians, religious figures, salesmen, magicians, pizza deliveries, spouses, children, encyclopedias, scientists, medical experts, insurance companies, NGO's, Monsanto... and just about everyone else? Haven't you read Plato? We all live in the cave, and you single out Google? Tip of the iceberg, Ken. Tip of the iceberg. |

Unhinged --
why do you wish to derail this thread? more importantly, why do you always have to "posture" before presenting an idea? You know absolutely nothing about my knowledge of truth, my perception of social ethics, etc. You are not competent to evaluate my level of naivite' about this or any other subject. I NEVER complained about Google supplying untruth -- just made an observation that their advertising is inconsistent with what you claim they do. What you offered may or may not be true. I take it as an opinion. You are sharing personal opinions, nothing more. Sadly, they do not deal with the issue I presented. .................................................... if you chose to post any more please address the actual issues presented. Start your own thread if you wish to discuss something else. regardless, any personal opinions about me have no place on any thread at any time. You goal should be to have me and others consider your opinions seriously. That is not working. Now, the critical issue is NOT whether false statements are offered on Search Engine, but that the correct information is not offered at all. People can follow their wits as to which posting to trust or accept. It is unfortunate that many only select from the first couple of offerings, and if we believe you, these choices are manipulated by profit. But, the correct answer should at least be available to those who desire it. Also, a valid search engine should be capable of finding whatever information is desired regardless of their profit motivation. ...................................................................... if you wish to start a thread on why all of the other institutions named by you also wallow in falsehoods I will be happy to participate. I personally do not feel that Google deliberately place false information above correct information. Perhaps other paying for the right of ranking have hidden agendas. There are many icebergs out there worth considering. That does not mean that my "tip" is on your favorite iceberg. by the way -- did you accept the challenge? Do you know the real source of the term "google?" Di you even try to find it?
