Hi All
I have just finished a new effect called RED CORNER, it is a signed torn cornered card that retores itself in a spectators pocket, I know there are several torn corner effects out there but ive been performing this version for a while and it gets amazing reactions, also leaving the spectator with an impossible keepsake... The ebook has a few different versions that can be peformed depending on your style, and impromptu version and also a version where the corner can also be signed and still restore itself in the spectators pocket ( my personal favourite ) I have a few review copies to give away right now, so if interested please let me know Russell2236@hotmail.com Ive been having a lot of fun with this. All the best R |

I just finished reading RED CORNER by Rus. This is a nicely written ebook containing 13 pages. I will say that I do not currently do a torn and restored corner on a card effect. Though, after reading this I will definitely give it a go! The ebook is well written and everything is explained in very good detail by Rus. Now- I think this is simplicity at it's best. In saying that- in my experience I have found some of the most simple methods to be some of the strongest hitters in magic. For me, RED CORNER falls in this category. The method is super simple, somewhat bold, but not so bold that it will scare you away from performing this effect. As a matter of fact, I am actually kind of excited to perform this.
Rus gives you a few different subtleties to add to the basic method that will make the whole routine stronger. For example, you can sign the torn corner and when the spectator removes the card from his/her pocket, the restored corner contains your signature or initials that you originally wrote on the corner. Another point I really like is that from the spectators point of view, the card with the torn corner and the actual torn corner of the card is in full view up until the vanish. For me, this is a strong selling point of the routine for the audience and as Rus stated, 'Rules out any foul play in the spectators eyes". There is very minimal set-up- might take you 1-2 seconds. Rus also goes over an impromptu version. Though- the set-up is so minimal it's almost pointless to do the impromptu version IMO. All in all- I really like this. Let me say- I do not like this because I was sent a review copy (Martin P.) I like this because of the illusion it will create using a very simple method. I also love the fact that to the spectator, the torn card and corner are in view before the corner vanishes. A strong point IMO. Another great point- you start clean and end clean!!! I do not know the price for this ebook but I will say I was very pleased with what I read. RNK

Okay - I had a chance to read this. Thanks to Rus for offering a free review copy to anyone interested.
This is fairer than the usual ploy of just offering review copies to the creator's friends. Whenever I read an effect - I often ask myself which creator I am reminded of? In this case - I am reminded of the work of Jay Sankey. This trick is simple, bold and easy to do. It is not a trick I would do since it is a little too simple for my tastes. However - the basic structure of the routine contains an interesting ploy that I am going to play with. Any magic which involves a transposition to the spectator's pocket is close to one of my Holy Grails in magic. As such - I am going to spend time seeing if I can adapt this trick for use with another principle to see if I can come up with something closer to my tastes. This trick makes use of a single bold idea (as is often the case with Jay Sankey). And I am rattling my brain to see if there are any other tricks/principles which it can be combined with to come up with something else. As with the later work of Jay Sankey - I am not sure who this will appeal to. Many people love the simplicity and boldness of ideas like this - whilst some (such as magic nerds like me) want to try and combine it with something else. With all that said - I applaud Rus for offering food for thought in attempting the type of plot which is usually not attempted. Later in this thread I will try and discuss other ideas which could be used with this idea - once others have had a chance to play with it. |

I was really interested to see Rus's take on the torn and restored card. I was not disappointed. First, some of you who have trouble restoring the card in front of a spectator will love it. The kicker is that restoring it in the spectator's pocket is more powerful! It is simple and esay to perform---but don't let that fool you. The key is the impact on the spectator---and in this instance it is a home run. With out giving away the method, the secret is something that will not occur to the spectator. They will be baffled. Rus has some ingenious methods---this is one. Get it.

...i got sent a copy...
i kinda like it, I kinda don't... I think the one element that is mentioned in the pdf (creased) should be expanded upon, as I think that is the strongest part of the entire thing... and by expanded up, I don't mean its not well explained, it is...its just that its the most subtle part of the best bit about the effect in my opinion... easy to do, explained well - is it worth £10? I think if I had bought it, I might be mildly disappointed at first - but I wouldn't pass judgement on it until I tried it out half dozen times...often in magic and mentalism, things may play out extra strong, or a little weak in our mind's eye - but as soon as you get it up and running with real people - the whole thing changes...just trying to be honest and fair with my comments... i would probably be incline to get them to sign the card, then fold it up and place it between their hands, then you have more of a visual of (for example) rubbing the torn corner out of existence and then directly through and back onto the card they are holding out in the open, in closed hands...that's also why the creased element to it is very important (in my opinion)... well thought out though - and it feels very commercial...

Hey guys,
I got sent a copy of this as well, and let me tell you, although may seem a bit bold, it works. I already tried it out for some co-workers and the reactions were off the charts. Bear in mind that I am a mentalist, so I thought I would show them some magic first, and this is easy enough to pull off, so I went ahead and went for it, and it went by great. I highly recommend this when it comes out. Contact Rus. The idea is great, and with the right presentation this will kill. Thanks Rus. Great job! Alex Alejandro

Thanks Iain,
Glad its given you food for thought, the creased idea is the strongest presentation as it leaves an impossible mark in the spectators mind of how the corner rstored itself, almost like a scar on the card. Thanks again for your comments best R |

I received a copy for review as well - I'm a little late to the game, but here goes.
If you know Rus, you know the method is going to be bold by design - and this is certainly no exception. This doesn't make it technically demanding by any means, but I do think that attitude and presentation are going to be important in selling the illusion Rus has created. I have yet to try this out on anyone, but I did find the effect to be pretty good. The method is practical and definitely for a worker. Now, when I first read the manuscript, I also remembered a gimmick/gaff from another single effect release that I thought would go perfectly with this. It isn't mentioned by Rus, but those of you who read the manuscript might already know what I am talking about. How does this compare to other TnR routines? I think it is really tough to beat Regeneration (Vogt) in terms of overall effect and method (and I've seen many - Fuze, Skyline, Torn Too, just to name a couple...), but where Rus' lacks in visual restoration it makes up for in both practicality and the ability to have the card restore in the spectator's pocket - and as we all know, magic in the hands (or pocket, or wherever) of a spectator can be very powerful. Overall, if the effect sounds good to you, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this. Just don't expect some crazy gimmicks or anything to do the work for you - that isn't what this is about! |

Hi all
Cheers for the comments guys, I use this normally with business cards, works well at corporate gigs as there are always stacks of business cards about. If your brave enough you can visually restore the corner of the card right in front of their eyes. There are many presentations for this possible, let your minds run wild. Flash paper is another visual way to restore the card. Thanks again Best R |

While I enjoy them immensely, I'm not by nature a cardician (the nature being my clumsy sleight-of-hand skills). I am, however, a big Rus Andrews fan for many reasons, not the least of which he comes out with effects I can actually do! But even if I couldn't, I would get his work just to enjoy his tremendous creativity. Red Corner has the anticipated infusion of that creativity and it's do-able, even for a klutz like me. Besides that it's a true spectator pleaser. Needless to say I highly recommend this.
Disclosure: Rus sent me a copy, probably to see if an all-thumbs handling worked. (It did). But I would pay and have gladly paid in the past for Rus' work. He's really never disappointed me and, with this new release, his record remains unbroken. |
