Here’s another prop I can’t figure out. It looks like a card frame because a poker-sized card will fit into the opening.
There is no false top, or slot, or sliding mechanism anywhere on the frame or on the cover that I can see. The bottom of the cover (opposite the side with the handle) appears to be metal, but is not magnetic. |

I have a similar one. It's a card changing device and works something like a dove pan in reverse. To set it up, a red card (say) is placed in the frame, and the metal shell is placed over it. To perform, place a different card (say, black) in the frame (actually in the shell), and then place the cover over it. If the shell is correctly made, it will stick by friction on to the cover so that when the cover is lifted, the card will have apparently changed. I think this prop is reasonably old, possibly 40s-50s, but I could be wrong.

I think there was a plastic version sold at Dollar Tree that made a miniature Van Gogh "painting" either appear or disappear.

That version was in the Milton Bradley Magic Works line years ago Michael. Interesting to hear a version is being sold in dollar stores.

Thanks, StevieDee! I didn't think there was a s---l on the cover, but I will check that out. And yes, just about everything I got was made in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

After reviewing my stack of instruction sheets, I discovered that this goes with a trick called "Flim Flam" and, according to the information supplied, was "conceived by Hugh Goss." In addition to the "Flim Flam Case," it was originally supplied with "one Chinese fan card without symbols, one Chinese fan card with symbols, one Gone with the Wind card, and two I.O.U. slips." The one-page instruction sheet gives directions for three different effects you can do with the case. None of the cards or slips have survived, but they would be simple to recreate. And the prop itself actually kind of neat!
