Hi everyone.
I am looking for a particular type of trick, and was hoping someone here could help me. I need a briefcase, or some sort of other 'box', for a close-up magic effect. I say close-up, because this box/case will be handed out to the audience for inspection. A whole bunch of casino chips will be placed in the briefcase. At a later time, the briefcase will be shown to be empty (hence the chips have disappeared!), and then a short time later again, the chips are back again! I don't want to use any method that involves a switch. Although the briefcase will be examined, it will be LOCKED - so they are only examining the outside of it. They only touch it when its closed, not open. Ideally, a briefcase with some kind of false bottom would be great. Or a briefcase that has a double opening - open one side and it shows chips, open the other side and it shows it as being empty. Would anyone have any idea where I could get something like this? Karen, Welcome to the Café!
You may also have a problem eliminating the sound of the chips moving around when it is suppose to be empty. I don't know of anything that can be shown and handed out for examination like you desire. It is not necessary to hand out objects to show them empty. Handing things out also slows down the magic and does not serve any purpose to the trick. Instead, you might consider a changing device or a Tip Over Box, they do make a small Tip Over Chest. Things of this nature will be very expensive, couple hundred dollars or more. I suggest you take look at the many props Abbott's Magic sells, maybe something will spark your situation. |

Thanks for your reply.
Actually the sound of the chips moving around is not an issue. (there could be loud music playing and/or the chips maybe wont be loose in the case). If only there was like a briefcase which simply had a false bottom which could be flapped up and down easily. Remember, the case will ONLY be handed out when its closed shut - not when its open. |

When I notice people, most everyone who receives a gift box, the 1st thing they do is shake it. That is why my comment mentioned the chips rattling when being handed to a person.
I do not know of any such brief case on the market, you will have to make a briefcase your self. Even if was available, it would be in $200 to $300 range or more. Kind of expensive for just an exchange item. If you are at all Crafty, you should have no problem making something up yourself. When you get your 50 posts you can enter the secret section. A member described how he made a switch lunch box as an exchange device, maybe that will help you design your case. |
