When I watch Ron Bauer's small clips of him doing some moves from his manuscripts on Youtube, it is very clear that he handles cards, coins or any small object as good as anyone out there - or ever. Yes, ever. And more important, has a great understanding of how sleight of hand works.
His manuscripts shows that Ron really, really knows his stuff. All way around. When I talk to people who are close to Ron, that all mention him as the best out there. Earlier this year I talked to Michael Landes, who knew many of the best greats, he mentions that Ron might be the best of the best. So.....Who is Ron Bauer? I am very intriqued by him and his magic. Was he close with Vernon, Marlo and Miller? He is still active? I know, he had some health issues earlier and he isn't getting younger. Hope he is doing good. Please share some stories or info about Ron. Love to hear some. |

I showed this post to RB, and he said to tell you thanks, and that you just made his day. He is still active and occassionally attends the weekly Monday Night Mystics meetings near Detroit.

Ron (and Patty) are doing great! He is one of my all time favorite people to spend time with, and his knowledge
of magic is unsurpassed. I'm honored to call him my friend. Check out my facebook page to see pics of Ron in action at the 2014 ABC Magic Stage Show. More importantly, pick up his entire series.......a wealth of knowledge and ideas for workers................. |

I was just inspired to take my mostly complete collection of the Think Like A Conjuror series out of my closet for another look. I always liked #3 a lot but with my faulty memory I have trouble learning scripts, and the series to be done properly requires the accompanying scripts to be learned and practiced until they are second nature and organically integrated with the overt effects as well as the hidden moves (some of which are "hidden in plain sight"). They are an excellent course in how to think about magic and put together effects and routines in the most powerful way. And yes, Ron Bauer knew Marlo and Vernon quite well. Otherwise I would never have seen that picture of the three of them on a California beach together back in the '6Os.

For all those who are inquiring about Ron Bauer (RB)…He IS THE BEST CONJUROR in the world! )...in my humble opinion...
I am PROUD to say that RB is my personal Friend, Mentor and I'm honored to be his Protege'. I first met RB in 1998 when my long time friend, The "Grate" Tom invited me to come to Michigan. The “Grate” Tom, over a couple week period, would call me and go on and on about how amazing RB’s material was and I just had to come see for myself… At that time, I was working my way through college, back in Oklahoma, performing restaurant magic and had read just about every magic book that was out at that time… Let’s just say I thought I knew what I was doing and thought I knew just about everything there was to know about magic tricks! LOL My introduction to RB began at 11am on a Sunday morning at RB’s house in Oxford Michigan and all I can say about this meeting… for 14 straight hours, RB proceeded to JACK my mind like it had never been JACKED before. It was like stepping into the Octagon with an MMA fighter… I didn’t have a chance! BUT, these weren’t just magic tricks. This was something I had NEVER seen in my life. Every trick RB did had a story, it was entertaining and I was fooled with EVERY SINGLE thing he did. One of the things that would really catch me off guard was, I thought we were just having a friendly conversation… in realty, he was already 2-3 steps into the presentation and so far ahead, it was impossible for me to catch up! I can’t stress enough how awesome of an experience this was. I am here to tell you, I NEVER caught him doing a “move” of any kind and remember, at this point, I had been involved in magic for about 15 years. I was looking for double lifts, palming, false shuffles… you name it, I NEVER saw a thing and for the first time, in a LONG time, I was watching REAL magic and I knew I had to learn EVERYTHING I could from this man, The UNDERGROUND Legend! Also, at this time, RB was in the beginning stages of the development of his Ron Bauer Private Study Series and when he began to explain to me what these were about, I KNEW I had found the TRUE SECRET to performing magic. I instantly wanted to change what I was doing and adapt the Private Study Series into everything I was doing. (Let’s fast forward about 8 hours…) As I recall, it was around 1am the next morning, Monday morning, and my mind was completely FRIED! We were wrapping up this 14 hour brain fry and just before The “Grate” Tom and I were about to leave, RB pulled one more on me, (remember, he was already into the story before I knew it was a trick) and this was the story of the Second Finger Top Deal (#17 in his series, which wasn’t in print at that time) and it was as close as I’ve come to letting every curse word known to man come out of my mouth! You’ve got to check this one out for yourself, but don’t shortchange yourself (#5, Hornswoggled Again… LOL) …get your hands on every single one of these studies, you're audience will thank you for the experience! I left that early morning trying to make sense out of everything that happened. One thing I did know, I wanted to learn EVERYTHING I could from RB! When I got back home and instantly put the first couple of Private Study Series in my repertoire, Gadabout Coins, Gypsy Curse and The Sloppy Shuffle. WOW! If you are looking to take your magic to new levels and get reactions from your audience like you’ve never had before, just take these three for starters. Over time, I implemented just about every one of the Private Studies and the reactions are priceless! I would perform on the weekends and every Sunday night, for the next year, I would call RB and we would go over the different reactions I would get, or didn’t get, and he would coach me on exactly what to say and how to say it. He would tell me the reaction I was supposed to get and if I didn’t get that reaction, he would tell me what to do to fix it. I would make the tweaks the next weekend and WOW! The reaction was dead on... and this only worked EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! LOL This took my skills to a level I didn’t even know existed! As my desire grew to learn more and more, RB gave me the opportunity of a lifetime… In 1999, I moved to Oxford Michigan and for 3 years I worked side by side with RB and soaked in everything I could from The UNDERGROUND Legend! I learned the ins and outs of each one of the Private Studies and several of us local magicians, who were also learning from RB, would go to magic conventions and we would blow the minds of every magician there… INCLUDING many of the mainstream headliner names you all know! Believe me when I say this, the Ron Bauer Private Study Series is in a class of their own. The simple reason, the RBPS series are performance pieces and are a written script that has a purpose. Please don’t take what I'm describing lightly! From RB’s teachings, I was able to book my first BIG gig in 1999 for $2000.00 and I only had to do 4 tricks! (Don’t tell RB, I didn’t pay him a commission! LOL) I hope this gives you some insight… I’m literally not even scratching the service of RB’s knowledge and teaching. If you want to take your magic to a new level, I highly recommend getting your hands on EVERYTHING RB has written. The RBPS series is a GREAT start (You could make a living just learning the RBPS and performing only these... they are THAT good!) and I challenge you to just take the very first one, Gadabout Coins and you’ll experience exactly what I’m talking about! Until next time... Dowdy |

When I was newb, I remember going over to Paul Chosse's house in the Russian River here in Nor Cal. He showed me some of the most incredible magic I could imagine. Kort's Chromosphere routine, Slydini paper balls over the head, coins changing to one another and splitting into different denominations, incredible card effects etc.
On more than one occasion during multiple visits I found myself blurting out loud, "That's the most incredible thing I've ever seen!" On multiple occasions Paul would say, "You should see Ron Bauer do it." Of course I had no idea who Ron was but if Paul said it, it must be true...which meant this Ron guy was a Bad A**. Years later, Kent Gunn, Dave Nelson, Theron Schaub and I created a convention here in San Francisco called the Golden Gate Gathering (GGG) which is going on its 10th year now. I can't remember what year we had him but we actually got him to come and lecture at the convention (something he had never done before). As we were speaking one night up in the session suite, he was just casually turning a card face up then face down repeatedly. Let's just say I had NO idea. Later that evening (or early morning) Ron riffled the deck at the front. So...? Wait, what!? How did the card end up in his hand? The local costume shop was out of toga's which meant starting a new religious cult was out. That aside, my entire perspective about magic began to change. We have kept in touch ever since. In 2009 I released my first (and only DVD). He asked me to send him a couple of copies. One for him and the other for a friend. A week later I received a call from Ron. We begin with the usual chit chat and then Ron said, "Alright, let me ask you something". For those of you who don't know, when Ron starts off a conversation with that sentence, you've already lost. He asked, "What do you think people think when they see that?" I was silent, processing the question and trying to formulate an acceptable answer. There was none. I knew the answer. It was eye candy. The question wasn't malicious in any manner. It was a question designed to make me question how I approached magic. That was my very first lesson (if you want to call it that) from Ron. That one question caused me to perform a complete 180. I will forever remember that question and the impact it had on me. When I stayed with him for a week about 4 years ago, he repeatedly messed me up...bad. I can honestly say that, moves aside, I learned more about conjuring in one week that I have in 20 years. I've been fortunate enough to spend some time with many great guys and a lot of time with others i.e. Jennings and Chosse. With that, here is the best way I can sum up the way I view Ron; Technically he's really good. He would be the first to admit that there are others out there technically better than he is or will ever be. Big deal and who cares. On the other hand, I've never met anyone, ever, who can get into your head in such a way that makes your brain effectively shut down. He's a friend, mentor. Hopefully I will one day guide another young magician the way Ron is guiding me. To me, Ron is the best conjuror in the world. Dorian Rhodell |

Until I met Ron I came from what I believed to be a pretty solid foundation in magic. In the nineties Lance Pierce took me under his wing. Through Lance I got to spend time with Roger Klause, Bob Stencil, and eventually ended up working at Malone's Magic Bar. I saw a lot more magic through Malone's, guys like Tim Conover, Jim Swain, Herb Zarrow, Eric Decamps, Chad Long, David Williamson, and many more. I read all the magic books I could and was privy to the "underground" work and moves. On top of that performing five to seven nights a week at Malone's had helped me develop what I thought was some pretty solid working material.
Enter Ron Bauer. I realized there was something different about Ron right from the get go. First, he never sounded like he was doing "patter." I was constantly caught off guard when I suddenly realized he was doing a trick. Second, everything he said during a trick seemed to make sense and was funny in a sophisticated way. Finally, there was never a hint of awkward movements, tension, or anything that looked out of place when he was performing. Often after fooling me with a particularly funny and amazing trick I would ask Ron to teach it to me. He would always go through the trick explaining not only the how, but he why. What really disturbed me about this, is that most of the time, I knew and did all the moves used in the trick, but somehow had missed every one during the performance. Very unsettling. If you've ever seen him (or should I say not seen him) do his "Two Card Turnover Technique" you know why Charlie Miller wrote in his Magicana series it was the best double he'd ever seen. The real eye opener for me though came from performing. At the time I was working five nights a week at Illusions in Royal Oak, MI. I learned one of the tricks from the series and added it to my act and noticed something strange. That trick seemed to go over better than anything else I did. So, I worked in more tricks from the series and the results were like night and day. I don't know really how to explain what I experienced, but audiences not only reacted better, they started talking to me differently. They seemed to believe I was this character brought out in these tricks. I asked Ron about this and he started explaining to me about premise, unity, subtext, tag lines, and hiding the moves right out in the open. I feel Ron is one of the most under rated and overlooked magicians alive, although, I know why many don't know about him. Ron will rarely show a trick or a move unless asked... I've watched many magicians show him dozens of items either directly or indirectly... but don't ask him to do anything... so he doesn't! The result is that many magicians go away unaware of any of his ideas or abilities. I'll wrap this up with this Most of the tricks in his "Private Studies Series" were developed and perfected in the 1950's. The twenty-four tricks in that series are just the tip of the iceberg as far as his material goes. He was friends with Don Alan, "Senator" Clarke Crandall, Ed Marlo, Jack McMillian, Charlie Miller, Dai Vernon, Milt Kort, and many more. Some of the people who influenced his magic thinking were Robert Houdin, Edwin T. Sachs, Al Baker, Ted Annemann, and Sid Loraine. He was also influenced by the card handler in his hometown who while watching a teenage Ron perform remarked "Boy. You got a break big enough to drive my caddy through!" Lance Pierce dubbed Ron "The Underground Legend" but he will share his knowledge with anyone who has a sincere desire to learn.
"The dumber people think you are. The more surprised they'll be when you kill them."

Ron Bauer began his magic training at age eleven in Portland, Oregon under the tutelage of Ted and Marie Hall, R. Vernon Cook, and Stan Payne of Star Magic. In his mid-teens, he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he was able to work part time as a professional magician, an actor in local radio, television, and live theater, and a disk jockey. Here he was fortunate enough to be guided by Jack Dean and Charles Aste, Jr. (at the time, illustrator for Ed Marlo). He was the first magician to appear on the two new television stations in Memphis, WMCT and WHBQ-TV. (These were the call letters in the fifties.) |

I've known Ron for about 25-26 years and can say that he is one of the very few living Grand Masters.
In Detroit he was always well known to not only know the inside "real work" but he could also do it. Years ago when Paul Chosse and Bob Stencel were still with us the four of us would meet up on occasion and that wonderful memories these times are for me. Recently Ricky Smith and I took a bit of road trip that had us going through Michigan and we were delighted to be welcomed into Ron's home. We spent a great day with him and once again we both learned a lot from this Master. Anyone serious about magic, any branch of it, should study Ron's work. He's the real deal. Bill Kalush |

I have also known Ron for many years. Bob Stencel was my first mentor while he still lived in Michigan. Before moving to Oklahoma, Bob introduced me to Ron and we have been good friends ever since. There are not many masters around who can claim to have the experience of Ron. He has worked with all of the legends......Vernon, Miller, Marlo, Kort, etc.. In the past, I was fortunate to be able to spend many Sunday's at Ron's while he was hosting Milt Kort.
Ron truly is a master. You simply cannot see any sleights when he is performing. There are no tip offs, no " get readys." Everything is natural. I always enjoys my visits to Ron's as I know that I will be fooled and that I am going to learn. Dan Andrus |

Hi, I guess I'm really fortunate to discover about Ron Bauer right now! Those stories are amazing and funny.
I'd like to know some things, from who already owns his material: 1) For what I understood, the script is very important in his work. It seems to me (taking from comments here and some other texts about him) that the right words matter a lot to get the right reactions from spectators. So, besides the effect, patter, presentation tips, does his booklets really teach you to think like a conjurer? I mean, can I learn his method (or theory) and apply for the tricks I love to perform to make them better? 2) Does anyone perform his material in other language? does it work? If the right words matter, how do you chose you patter when you translate? I'm very interested in this. The way people describe his magic makes me think about poetry, in the sense that in poetry you take a lot of arbitrary rules, each from a group of the language (like words, grammar, rhythm, rimes, meaning, subtext) and make them all fit together, in a way that all those rules (that usually have their logic different from one another) form a unity. (The greatest example I know of this is the "Commedia" by Dante Alighieri - the "Divine Comedy" - which can only be complete, in meaning and rhythm, when in archaic italian) 3) is there a way to get his material in digital form? I know he sells the manuscripts, and ships them world wide, but I think lots of people living far away from the states would be glad with a digital copy (that you don't need to wait or pay for shipping). I'm from Brazil, by the way. 4) I noticed on his website that there are some numbers of his private lessons with a "coming soon" status. Is he still producing those? Will he release it? Or was it already produced and he is doing a second print or something? Thanks! |
