I've watched every single show and found them all very good. Sure, some bits were better than others, but it was all very funny and the magic was excellent. Greatly entertaining. The bits in the cafés were hilarious! What more could one wish for?
My only misgivings, from a magician point a view that is, is that the editing was not always fair; by that I mean that some of the mental effects look much better and in some cases leave no room for explaination... Well maybe they are that good? |

Congratulations on the show Mr Monkey. Livin' the dream! The old lady was floored when you pulled her meal from the paper bag...

I can't believe you did knife-under-the-paper-bag bit on Dave Courtney - using HIS hands!
For anyone who might not know, Big Dave Courtney is a much-feared and much-respected ex-gangster (the man on whom Vinny Jones' character in "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" was based). By all accounts he's a genuinely great guy and among the last people on Earth you'd want as an enemy. Well played, Joe. This one segment alone justifies a second series, in my opinion. Cheers, Cy. |

Now I know! always good to place a name to a face.
The faces on the people during the matrix routines are priceless! I hope you don't mind but ive sent you a private message asking about a few things.

My favourite parts so far have been Max's tricks with Joanna The Psychic Piana. More musical magic!

**This post was somehow edited without my permission last week (??) so I'm putting it back up**
Hackmonkey, You said that I am off base with what I said. How is that? You already admitted that you used two of the effects from T.H.E.M. You said that Sky One had given you a tape and asked you to. I suppose you were right when you told us that it was unfortunate that Sky aired their programme before yours After seeing last weeks show Max's Russian becomes more like "Magick's" Spanish charater. Not his tricks. It's just like the Spanish guy with a Russian accent, all the same mannerisms. I guess you were right when you said that having a producer that worked on Magick was an influence on your material. To be fair there are some new ideas in there. I laughed at the false teeth from mouth bit and the cards breaking window bit made me smile with nostalgia. |

I've watched all the Max Magic episodes so far and I haven't been very impressed.
I think the most disappointing thing was that I felt like I'd seen it all before. The material that was taken directly from T.H.E.M, Zennon's card through window with the window smashing and Jerry Sadovitz's thing with the traditional magician that does the traditional magic to booing from the audience etc. I have to agree with Bodie's comments. No matter what reason you give Hackmonkey, your show does look like it has stolen a lot from other people. Also, the Russian character did remind me of Magick's Diego Martinez. I think there will be a surge of magic shows now that will also copy the character magic thing. It's like when Blaine did street magic and we all followed. |

Will there be any opportunity for us in the US to see any versions of it? I'm not even familiar with character magic.

Slow down guys, we don't get a lot of magic on TV in the UK and as soon as we get one you all shoot it out of the sky before it's halfway up.
I used to DJ on pirate radio, and now I am on nationwide. If I were to suggest that I had the control over my current show that I had when I was on pirate I would be lying. The media is a huge monster that controls all under its wings; it makes and breaks people, shows, and ideas. I really enjoyed Max Magic. I havn't seen them all so far but I'd rather watch that than some dated Paul Daniels repeat. just my two pence as a media insider.

Please tell me where I can see these dated Paul Daniels repeats? I'd love to be able to see older classic shows without some d-rate comedian interjecting every thirty seconds to deliver some crummy gag or statement of the obvious.
Unfortunately that kind of documentary treatment is all I've really found in this country. |

Here is an edited version of a message I posted earlier. As for 'Playing Tricks' well... myself, Max and Chris met with those producers over a year before they made 'Playing Tricks' and gave them a shed load of ideas, some of which we used in our new show; if they used some of them then fine. I have never seen any of 'Playing Tricks' so I don't know if they had a similar character. My good friend Tariqu is in the show and we are hooking up to watch each others shows, so I will check that out. But as far as I'm concerned the matrix character was an independent creation and an obvious choice for a magic 'character.'
As for the character magic and 'Magick,' Max, Chris and I were shopping that idea around to various T.V production companies at least a year or so before 'Magick' came out. As Xia said T.V and media companies control their product tightly: if they want something their way, they get it, if they don't it's gone. Sky called the shots and that's just how it is. Unless you have had experience dealing with major T.V companies yourself your opinion has no validity at all. This is the last I am going to post on this subject as I am sick of defending myself over something which I had basically little control over or nothing to do with. I said don't do this or we shouldn't do that, still usually happened. For those who enjoyed the show thanks for your comments. Make sure you catch the last two episodes as they are definitely my favourites. Joe |

You don't have to defend yourself Joe - the show is great! Accept that there will always be some people who dislike what you do. IN magic, which is a performance, there will always be people who are jealous of you performing while all they can do is stay at home practicing double-lifts and boring their friends.
"Max Magic" has style and wit, and scores enough hits for the occasional misses to be forgiveable, especially given the amount of material there is in it. Hell, it would be more surprising if there were *not* occasional similarities to other shows. Look at "Little Britain," a fast-moving charater-based sketch show. Has it "ripped off" "The Fast Show"? Of course not! You might as well say that every comedy double act of the 20th century "ripped off" Laurel and Hardy. You sometimes wonder if there has *ever* been a magic show on TV that magicians have all liked. I doubt it! Thankfully, magicians are presumably not the target audience. |

Minster: Nicely put and, in my opinion, absolutely correct.
I enjoyed both Magick and the THEM pilot (actually, in retrospect, I think what I liked most about Magick was the character who occasionally popped up and screamed "You can't hurt me, I'm a £$%^ing Power Lord!"). Bottom line for me is that we've got hundreds of channels and almost no magic on any of them. There'll always be a slot in my Sky Personal Planner for an entertaining, diverse and well thought-out magic show. For me, Max Magic meets those criteria admirably. Cheers, Cy. |

I never claim to be an expert in anything I do, so I am not one to criticize the show.
However I think for magicians the show is entertaining; however, most of us know how the illusions are done or at least the majority of them. Saying that I think the show is great and well made and hope there will be a second series. We need more magic on tv, but not too much as people at work think I'm a witch with some of the magic I do. Hey, there's a good idea... Joe do you need a witch for the next series??? Keep up the good work. |

I think a lot of those into magic forget to watch magic programs and see them through the eyes of a layman. They are gonna see it a lot more differently, especially if they don't watch much magic usually.

I missed Max Magic... what routines did hackmonkey "steal" from THEM?

Well the first series has gone swimmingly. Ratings have been good, we nearly doubled our viewing figures from the first to the last episode. Reviews have all been good and the second series looks set t go ahead!
We should be shooting in the summer which will be so much better. Much of the last series was filmed in the winter usually from 7am as it got dark so early. I was freezing my butt off in those Matrix bits, try doing sleight of hand when you can't move your fingers! So wish us luck. |
