Hi Guys,
First of all I owe you all a huge thank you, I recently go t back into performing and this forum has been a fantastic source for reviews tips and advice - it's been fantastic. My name's Russell, I used to perform to few friends etc at school, ended up doing a few shows there and a couple of kids parties but then once I went to uni, my interest, for whatever reason fizzeld away - always had a keen interest in watching, and with my magician's hat on, but not performing. The a few months ago a mate who puts a biggish party on every year, only for around 30 people, with bands etc meantion in passing he'd like a magician to play this year - I said I used to do some in passing, and before you know it I was on the bill. In the past I was more of an all rounder - not focusing on 1 particular part of magic but I've now leaned towards mentalism and I think that's where I'll be focusing. After doing a fair bit of reading and purchasing, I put a show together that lasted about 45minutes. I played it with a bit of comedy due to the crowd and the atmosphere and it went down a storm - amazingly it all went well. I was extremely nervous but soon got the bug back and fell in love with the art again. I'd love to tell you about what I did and go into detail but I'm sure you've got more you'd like to read. My Dad has a van on a holiday park, and he was gutted he didn't get to see the show, so I also ended up putting another show together for a holiday park for around 60 people - I learned almost a totally new routine so it's been a busy 4 months or so for me, every spare minute has been either practicing or writing. This second gig didn't go aswell, I think they enjoyed it and I hid the mistakes I made, but I screwed my finale ("Prize Draw" - Marc Spellman) - managed to cover it up, but I was dispapointed at the end. I was also suprised at which tricks played better than others. If you can bare with me I'd like to tell you a little about this... It was a Christmas Party (as it's end of season - early xmas - october!) so I had a few Christmas twists on things - I had a lady stand up and try and remember a gift she once recieved that was either particularly good or especially bad, and then went on to tell her what gift she was thinking of, what was so good about it and who bought it for her - suprisingly I got a ripple of applause but not what I expected. I'm not sure why. Maybe I was being quite light hearted to start with - I did a tossed out deck routine, and an invisable deck routine, both of which I joked around a little, got a few big laughs etc, then I dropped this in and felt a bit like they were shocked, but no massive reaction - any way I'm rambling!!! Most of the people here were of an older generation so the show didn't flow particualrly well as some people misunderstood or was slow coming up, or struggled reading things, but this is obviosuly my own fault, but it was all a learning experience. At the end of the show someone took a card and said she manages quite a few events over the year, (someone considerably younger) and would love to use me - she by far gave the best reaction and screamed out on one reveals so fingers crossed it'll go somewhere - I have nothing esle lined up at the mo, so need to keep my motivation up. Thanks for listening to me drone on - if anyone is actaully interested I'd love to tell you about my 2 sets. Kindest Regards Russell |

Hi Russell,
Welcome to the Café! It sounds as if your are excited to get back into magic and are willing to put forth the work it will require to build a great show. Each show is a learning experience - make sure you take advantage of it. I am not a mentalist, so can't help with your show, but I'm sure someone here will. Hudson |

Hey Russell--
As long as you are not selling yourself as the "GREAT I AM", i'ts OK to have an occasional "problem". When I used a bit of mentalism in college concerts, I had to force myself to make a few "mistakes". It helped to convince them that I was human!

Welcome russellajallen,
And welcome back to Magic. WOW, a 45 min show after a long hiatus from Magic is quite an accomplishment (especially one that went over well. LOL) There are a lot of Mentalist here to play with so you are sure to have a good time. -Mary Mowder |
