I recently found an old packet type trick on the big auction site called "Caged Lion."
The effect was put out by Paul Diamond Magic Company in Fort Lauderdale, FL which is no longer in business. I'm not sure when this item was released but since the instruction sheet has the old sticky ink that lifts off the page, my guess is that it may be from the 70s or early 80s at most. The effect is very similar to Tenyo's "Wild Wallet." You place an empty cage card on one side of the wallet and a selected animal card on the other side and close the wallet. Make a magical pass, open the wallet and the animal has disappeared from its card and appears inside the cage card. The method used in "Caged Lion" is similar but the Tenyo version is more developed and allows for a free animal choice where the "Caged Lion" version uses the magicians force. The "Caged Lion" cards are slightly smaller that bridge sized cards and made of durable plastic to last a life time. The wallet is a simple plastic Himber style wallet with clear plastic windows. The Tenyo cards (Plastic wallet version) are very thin card stock. The wallet is a heavier more durable make. Tenyo's version (with the plastic wallet) came out in 1991. My questions are: 1. What year did Paul Diamond first release "Caged Lion?" 2. Who had the original idea for this effect? Was it Paul Diamond or Tenyo? I'm hoping some of you magic historians out there can shed some light on this. I've tried to post a picture of "Caged Lion" with a before & after shot and showing the three animal cards. I'm looking forward to some feedback on this one. Thanks, Kirk Click here to view attached image. |

Ok...is there not anyone out there that owns or is familiar with this trick (Caged Lion)?
I was really hoping someone would know how old the trick was. Being so much like Tenyo's Wild Wallet, I thought it would generate some comments. |

It's a little-known trick. Have never seen it before.
I asked Shimomura about it, and he replied: "Both of tricks are alike a little, but the effect, the principle and origin are all different." |
