A modern form of the ancient practice of laughing at what we do not understand
or an artistic way of forcing reality on those leading fictional lives though hope, promise and defeat of the impossible

Magic is making the what People perceive as impossible.
Magic is a power only given to the gifted few. I don't like either of these two but two I do use, Magic is science with out the explanation - We use for our work as science communicators. And when I analysed my magic a while ago and was brain storming what I want my magic to be and what I want pepole to se I came up with this, Magic is away of showing the known impossible as possible. A example of this is when I get someone to pick a card then I read ther mind and tell them what it is. I wanted to stay away from the mind ready thing a bit. I dint want it to be smug or cockey. So I say it impossible to know what that card is I cant read your mind. But if I could I would say your card is... (pause).. then I name ther card. There is more to it then that but I hope you get where I am going with it. Hope this helps,
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

In the context of stage magic (as opposed to a discussion on worldviews or religions), I'd classify magic as:
a performing art with many sub genres and specialisms, where 'fooling' or 'deceiving' the audience is the essential, central component to evoking the aimed for reactions of wonder, mystification and entertainment. |

Or, from the free online dictionary (American Heritage Dictionary):
"1. The art that purports to control or forecast natural events, effects, or forces by invoking the supernatural." But now we're moving away from magic the performing art into magic the worldview and religious practice (though there are blurry lines here). |

While we are dvelling at this Borderline:
When was this line drawn, when did the performing art become something different to the occult art. I think we had a mixture for a long while. Edit: to be on topic, when did we start to need TWO Definitions for the word magic? |

Magic is transporting people to a place where the impossible can happen, if only for a short time.

We have two definitions just as we have multiple definitions for many words. The reason we have two different definitions for magic is because they are two distinctly different practices. Funny enough they are less different than many think. But I just raised the question when the differents came to be. I just wonder if in ancient egypt the cups and balls was already a different thing to "real magic". In India the border is very thin and you get a mixture of tricks, occultism and religion. |

From my very limited reading there are two opinions on that. One side says that stage magic has its roots in occult/religion and grew naturally out of it; the other side says that stage magic is a largely modern phenomena that was born out of the originally disparate streams of sideshow/fete hucksters, gambling, vaudeville and stage illusions.
Magic is such a convoluted river, with so many streams running into it, that I think any pronouncement one way or the other to be wrong. It's both, and more. |

Magic is a moment of wonder bestowed upon our audience. With great psychology it could become a reality check. Just my thoughts on "what is magic".

I define magic as the performance art of making the apparently impossible seem real.
I only tried to define it so I could separate mentalism from magic in my own mind. Patrick |

Magic is a device for prolonging adolescence beyond all reasonable bounds.
Or, if you're a dealer, a device for determining how many *really are* born every minute. |
