"Slum" is an old carnie word for the cheap prizes you might win at a "pitch 'til you win joint. Herbie had a "cat rack". You "bought" 3 baseballs for $.25, and if you knocked one cat off the "back fence", you a piece of slum. I can still hear Herbie (almost 70 years ago) "A cane, a lei, 2 pins or 2 charms"! Two cats you got a piece of "plaster" (plaster of paris "dolls" ) Three cats (I NEVER saw ANYBODY knock off three cats!!!) and you got an Indian Blanket. Every spring, Herbie would order a 12 gross of canes (a dowel stick with a novelty knob on top) 12 gross of leis 12 gross of pins and charms, and was "in business for a month!!! --Oh, he took the Indian blankets out of a crate, had them dry cleaned, and he was set for the season!
Foxy had a joint with three wooden "milk bottles" sitting on a board which sat on an old tire. 3 base balls for a quarter. Same prizes as Herbie had. Late one summer a big storm hit the fair grounds. When the storm was over, all the stick joints on the midway were flattened. The Ferris Wheel and the Loop O Plane were twisted metal. The side show top, the corn game, two "single O's", and the mitt camp, were on the ground. The only thing left standing were three milk bottles on the spare tire! They weren't flat stores, but they were the next thing to it! Come to think of it, come of the old brick & mortars were maybe just one step above a flat store?

TARBELL is a great beginners guide. It has every basic move and sleight. I didn't appreciateagic until I bought the set on eBay. That is when I really started to enjoy magic. Many effects on the market today which costs $$$ cam be created at home for virtually nothing. Eg paper to hat. Also the very first trick I his book vol. One still had many spectators puzzled. I highly recommended the entire series but it is not a quick read by no means. You will change as a magician though.
