I am thinking of buying Derren Brown's book "pure efeect" and i have heard there is a chapter on card magic. I am a bit worried about parting with my money because when it was in print the first time everyone criticised it. Is the card magic chapter good?
Thanks in advance Danny |

Everyone critised Pure Effect? Not at all! This book got a fantastic review from all of the major magazines. It contains some killer material... I don't use anything from it, but have been fooled by almost everything inside!

'Pure Effect' contains some card magic, but there is not one, specific chapter on card magic.
Derren has also released a video, The Devil's Picturebook, which IS all about card magc and nothing else.

Perhaps 'Pure efeect' got criticised, but 'Pure Effect' was very well received. There is some card magic in it, but my feeling is that the strength of the book lies in the thoughts behind the mentalism section of the book.

But what about the missing tricks in later releases of the book? Do you think this was right of him to do?

I think it's right of him to do whatever he wants to with his own book. But the extra tricks were never published. DB's made this clear a few times. They got into a pre-publication, home-made version of the book which was sold on one day at a mentalists gathering. After that they were removed for publication. The idea that there are different versions of the book around is an exaggeration.
You may hate it, but it's a very important modern magic book, and the guy is undoubtedly a genius. It was amazingly well-received. I think apart from some beginners who just wouldn't 'get it', it's undoubtedly a good buy. |

Danny,
if you are a beginner of even a professional, you will learn a great deal from this book, It taught me to look at my magic as if it was MAGIC and not just a routine trick, belief in oneself is an absolute must. The card section is good but I believe it's more intermediate to advanced than beginner level. forget about the tricks that are not there as the ones that are (as well as his Ideas) are worth the price. If I lost my copy, I would get another. |

I jave a copy of "Pure Effect", and I love the card tricks. His "velvet turnover" is a wonderful, versatile move.

Mm, I agree. I saw Derren do it as an ambitious routine, ten times in a row, the card repeatedly jumping to the top with no moves to see and a spectator turning the card over each time. And to think he doesn't do any of it anymore...
