Even if that sentence made sense, it would still be wrong.

Please tell us how?

Thousands of workers assembling iPhones in warehouses in China would be happy to explain, I'm sure.

What would they be doing for a living without that job?

You're assuming they're actually making a living on the pennies a day they receive. But hey, at least we get cheap iPhones, don't we?

They ARE, in fact, making a living. And I notice rather unsurprisingly that you didn't answer my question, because we know what the answer is - they'd be in even worse shape. Because if they had a better opportunity than the one they've got assembling iPhones, they wouldn't be assembling iPhones, would they?

Also who assembled the computer he is typing on?

These questions are not comfortable. Not when you want to keep your heart bleeding.

This was addressed already in an earlier post. In case you missed it, here it is again:

"Capitalism is arranged so that in order to survive, you must be part of the market, so there's nothing strange or hypocritical in people selling their books, or in working on computers made by people who are exploited. Capitalism is worldwide--there's no opt out button for most of us if we want to continue to live with our families and friends.

What would be hypocritical, however, would be to deny that that system does indeed exploit millions of people, and to deny that people need to work together to change it to a more humane system that puts people before profits."

There is an opt out button.

Clever how being a hypocrite isn't being a hypocrite.

So slavery was good, because the alternative was death?
Rather, we measure the oppression of a system precisely by its lack of viable alternatives.

OR maybe we should measure the success of a system by how many people it brings out of poverty. Name a system that has brought more people out of poverty than capitalism.

Really? Within capitalism, where is the opt out button to survive without the consumption of products that are the result of exploitation? Growing your own orange trees, perhaps? There is nothing that is not a result of the exploitation of labor, whether in the mining of the raw materials or in the manufacturing process.

What is hypocritical is to claim ideals of freedom and democracy while pretending that a worldwide oppressive system is not the central fact for the vast majority of the people in the world.

Well, the factory workers in China are still impoverished.

It might be worth considering alternatives to all and nothing.

I am unable to imagine zero capitalism in the modern world. But I can certainly imagine legislative improvements to what we have.

That doesn't quite answer the question now, does it?

Have Apple pull out of their contracts with Chinese factory workers and see how well those workers are doing then.

ESN's logic towards capitalism seems to be the same logic he uses in school shootings. If it doesn't stop ALL poverty then it doesn't stop ANY poverty.

Well, you have to have SOME sort of principle in mind while you sit at home, lovingly cradling your Communist Manifesto...

Nah, just have Apple pay them more than poverty wages. We don't need to buy two or three iPhones per person, or upgrade every year.

What's an appropriate non-poverty wage in those Chinese villages? If it gets too close to American minimum wage, your Chinese factory workers are going to find themselves unemployed and wishing they were being exploited again.

If I were a cartoonist, I'd draw a picture of foreign factory workers shaking their heads at the thought of disadvantaged Americans forced to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for a house.
