So I have this buddy that asked me a question last night and I had a harder time answering it then I thought I would. The basics of the questions was, Derek, I want to start doing strolling magic for money, but I am not ready to dive into being a professional, I just want to do gigs here and there and build up my talents even more before I start really marketing and stuff.

Immediately I was thinking, psh, that's easy, but ended up finding myself at a loss for words for an "easy" way to do it, I have been spending so much time on scripting shows, reading theater books, designing a website, getting promo pictures, doing charity work etc etc, so that was kinda the only thing that I could really tell him to do.

He isn't like professional by any means, He does really solid magic, but has a lot of talent in communicating with people, and he even has this generic business cards that he made, I told him that I can help him design a cool looking card on photoshop and told him about using wix or wordpress to be able to make a basic site, and the only other advice I could give him was word of mouth or maybe putting up some posts on craigslist and charging a very reasonable price.

Aside from working you butt off and always pounding the pavement, putting a lot of effort into your online marketing, always working to build a client base and staying in contact with them etc etc, I just don't see him at that point yet.

So, How would you guys do it? Lets say you were back to where you just had some solid routines and could do really well at strolling gigs, and were really good people persons, What would you do to pull strolling gigs? I didn't ask him what he thought about doing restaurant gigs (Ill text him right now) but besides that, how would you go about trying to find some private home party strolling gigs outside of friends and family or other ways to make some money here and there? He already does some free stuff but keeps saying he wants to start making at least a couple hundred bucks here and there from it. Aside from telling him everything I'm doing with the marketing and websites and mailing lists and yada yada, I'm not sure what he could do that is "easy" to pull a gig or two a month and just start off slow so he can reinvest the money into paying for real promo stuff.

Not so easy when you really think about it. At least for me anyway.

Ditto what Danny said. But...

Network. Tell everyone he knows that he is a magician. Possibly join a SAM or IBM club if there is a local chapter. Maybe do some free stuff to get his name out there.

Magic is the bacon in the breakfast of life.

God bless you and have a magical day

Join a magic club if you can. Our club gets asked regularly for walk around performers. The money goes to the club, but it provides the individual with the experience and "chops" to go out and work on their own.

Read the sticky bun at the top of this section, and that should give you an idea.
Reality is a real killjoy.
