Suddenly I am getting questions from people about stains on silks and from silks on props. It is new and was a mystery to me until I asked my wife who is a physician. (Apparently, magicians are not the only ones having this problem with stains!)
Surprise! Hand cleaners and Sanitizers can cause the problem with dyes and the mineral content of certain props. (Many doctors recommend washing hands with soap and water over using hand sanitizers anyway!) The solvents (deliberately) left on the hands become a problem when the hands come into contact with other items and especially with sweaty hands. Remember that the solvents are STILL on your hands! The solution is to still wash your hands with soap and water. (An old solution to a new problem!) |

Thank you Bob.
I don't use this product unless I'm in a hospital but I have a good friend who does use silk and loves the sanitizers. I'm sure she has already seen the stains but has no idea where they came from. I'll pass this info along to my local friends. It is weird because Hand Sanitizer is sited as a stain remover. I'd think twice about using it now. -Mary Mowder |

Interesting observation, Bob. A couple years ago I got some sanitizer on my suit pants and it left a stain. I was unable to get it out myself (spot remover, etc.) until I took them to the dry cleaners. They were successful but I was beginning to wonder if my pants were stained or faded (perhaps bleached) in that spot. Thanks for the alert.

Yesterday I went to the doctor and could not help noticing that he used the hand sanitizer before using his computer. Then he washed his hands with soap and water! LOL!
