Is it just me, or is there a nod to Simon Lovell in there? The details are left to the [other] reader[s].

Simon does a lot to be self-effacing in performance. One important strategy which I didn't mention in the essay is the use of self-deprecating humor as a means to make the triumph of the will less overbearing.
