I have two books (no I'm not selling them just thought I'd pass the titles on so you can hunt them down)because the info is useful to us all
1) The Thrill of fear 250 years of Scary Entertainment by Walter Kendrick here is the blurb : Why do we enjoy scaring ourselves? Why do some of the largest industries in the world--books, films, television, toys and games--depend so crucially on ghouls, ghosts and zombies? Walter Kendrick provides an answer with this authoritative history of 250 years of horror as entertainment. 2)Fear A Cultural History By Joanna Bourke In this groundbreaking book, acclaimed historian and prize-winning author Joanna Bourke covers the landscape of fear over the past two hundred years: From the nineteenth century dread of being buried alive — a subject dear to the heart of Edgar Allen Poe — to the current worry over being able to die when one chooses; from the diagnoses of phobias and anxieties produced by psychotherapists and lovingly cataloged, to the role of popular culture and media in inciting panic and dread; from the horrors of the nuclear age to the fear of twenty-first century terrorism, Fear tells the story of anguish in modern times. just thought I'd inform my Brethren of these dark treasures about a topic near and dear to my heart

Excellent, I have not read either of them. Thanks for sharing, the bigger the library, the better the knowledge.

Vlad thanks for that. I think it is important to understand what it is we are ultimately trying to do. Which one do you think has the most value overall.

I think I like fear a cultural history a little more as it delves more into the psychology (the other is film, books, media and why we are drawn to them, but less the phobias and things like that)

That reminds me that I also wanted to order "The Pop-Up Book of Phobias" by Gary Greenberg. If I get books shipped from the US I might as well order more than one.

Great thanks for that I've ordered it. On my journey I found this book on monsters and fear:
http://www.amazon.ca/Monsters-Unnatural-......+History Written by Stephen T. Asma a Professor of Philosophy at Columbia College Chicago, where he holds the title of Distinguished Scholar. History teachers in other college are also teaching from it.

These are another couple of interesting ones
1) Gothic by Richard Davenport-Hines- Beginning with the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, an event so powerful it created a new landscape and inspired the desolate and savage paintings of Salvator Rosa, Richard Davenport-Hines traces the evolution of the gothic imagination. This revelatory history ranges through art, architecture, gardening, literature, photography, filmmaking, music, and clothing design, and takes in artists and creations as various as Byron, Horace Walpole, Goya, Frankenstein's monster, Edgar Allan Poe, Jackson Pollock, David Lynch, The Terminator, and The Cure. 2) Nightmare on Main Street -Mark Edmunson-Once we've terrified ourselves reading Anne Rice or Stephen King, watching Halloween or following the O. J. Simpson trial, we can rely on the comfort of our inner child or Robert Bly's bongos, an angel, or even a crystal. In a brilliant assessment of American culture on the eve of the millennium, Mark Edmundson asks why we're determined to be haunted, courting the Gothic at every turn--and, at the same time, committed to escape through any new scheme for ready-made transcendence. Amazon has some great prices on the used Gothic one (I paid full price when it first came out , big book 448 pages)

Interesting Gothic book. I was closely connected with the Goth scene in Toronto in the mid 80's and a fan of all things horror growing up.
Reading the reviews, I'm not liking the direction he seems to take with the music and film references (the Cure and Batman?). He loses credibility on the pop culture front with me anyways. The castles and architecture, paintings, literature of the real period seem more interesting. It worries me when people say he sites references from people's webpages. What do you think, is it worth the skimming or are there better offerings on the subject? I really am interested in a good cross section of all things Gothic. I guess at $1.00 you can't go wrong for a hard cover Ok I bought it can't really lose.

I'm a fan of reading them all, if it turns up any new subject or spin on something I haven't thought of I feel it's time well spent (some of the newer Batmans do have a Gothic tone, I have one with him and Edgar alan Poe, Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, gotham by gaslight) I think the websites was more to reference rather than rely on the info as truth
and as you say at 1.00 you can't go wrong (i paid 35.00 when it first came out)

True that! Thanks, looking forward to reading it. Looks like a big book, I'm sure there is plenty in there I would like. A one stop goth shop.
