Get yourself a few clad Kennedy halves as well as some larger, 40mm-ish coins (Eisenhowers or Morgan copies), a copy of Bobo and start with the basic palms, transfers etc. There are no 'best' coins per se, although I must admit a fondness for silver dollars, as they look, feel and sound great. As with any new endeavour, start out with training wheels before spending your hard earned money on expensive coins and gaffs.
Oh, and have fun! |

Actually, that link he posted to Johnson's website went specifically to a page offering non-gaffed "matching" clad Kennedy halves, which Johnson evidently sells for $1.25 apiece.
So yes, it seems that those are regular coins.

Ceierry,
If you will PM me I have what you need. I live in Germany so getting them to you should be easy. I will happily sell them at face value plus postage. I can throw in some old English pennies for free as well. Dale |

Excuse my ignorance. I've been doing magic for many years, but am unfamiliar with European coins. Are there no coins available in Europe that are appropriately sized with milled edges? I would usually suggest to a beginner that they use U.S. quarters or halves depending on their hand size and the distance at which they will be working. I wouldn't know what to tell the o.p. or anyone else from Europe.
