I purchase very few mentalism releases, but I did purchase The Black Project. Looch's offerings have always been of the highest quality and The Black Project is no different. Its a beautifully produced book.
This book is not for everyone. If you are an amateur or a student of mentalism and are primarily interested in learning a bunch of new routines, this book may be a little expensive and you may be better off sticking to some of the classic texts. However I did enjoy reading about Looch's performing experiences and his insights into his performing repertoire. I would equate the experience of reading this book to spending a weekend with Looch talking about routines and experiences. I'm very pleased with the purchase. I hope The Black Project sells out very soon. |

I don't own The Black Project, but I think that before criticizing the price we should understand that there are crappy effects out there that sell for a ton of money. Mostly, nowadays, you can buy a single effect that costs anywhere from $15 to $20 (Yes, some sell for less too). So, if Looch's book contains even 20 effects and if we say that the price of each effect is 10 GBP then that's 200 GBP there. Then, he shared his insight, his experience and his valuable suggestions. From this perspective, Looch can ask for more for The Black Project. It's years of work. A simple thing to do is not to buy it if it's too expensive. Well, I didn't buy it because it was expensive, but that doesn't give me the right to criticize his work.

I think the question of pricing for TBP has been beaten to death. I was one of those who initially objected to what seemed to me a very high price for the book, but at the same time, I am 100% of the mind that Looch can and should charge whatever the market will pay for his work. I was primarily coming from a weariness of "limited releases" at ever escalating prices. I think it is bad for the art of mentalism.
I am certain that TBP is an excellent release and I would have bought it no question at $250 USD, but closer to $500 with shipping? I considered it and ultimately decided I have more than enough routines (it's scripts I need *** it!) and that Looch's primary performance mode (walk around) wasn't what I do (professionally, stage and parlor only). I try not to buy anything these days "just to have it" or to satisfy my curiosity. |

I ordered copy today, really looking forward to reading it. I am new to magic and mentalism, so it is not my job, its more of a hobby. I will add a review (from a novices point of view) once I finished it.

Yes constructive criticism is a good thing but as a general rule it should be delivered privately and from a genuine desire to help. Dale Carnegie said something along the lines of be hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise. Suffice it to say that what you deem praiseworthy in others you should carefully imitate, and what in them may appear defective, you should in yourself amend. Yes reviews should always be honest but that should be about the content, not the performer. I'm only half way through the content so not ready to post my full review beyond I love what I have read so far and I love the quality of the books. Nobody will be buying my copy second hand while there is breath in my body. One thing I will say about the performer in this case is that he is a thoroughly decent chap. Looch may not appreciate me sharing this but I still owe Looch £50 (which I need to get my ar5e into gear and pay). When I bought the book I had just enough to buy the book but Looch refused to leave me without any cash in my pocket, handed me £50 back and told me to owe it to him. Full disclosure, I consider Looch a friend, we don't hang out together like Atlas and Looch do, we don't chat regularly, but from the kindness, generosity and respect he has shown me on every interaction I have had with him, how could I consider him as anything but a friend. I purchased The Black Project (no. 25) and I cannot fault the pricing, given the content. Some outstanding routines, fascinating anecdotes drawn from real-world experience, beautifully packaged and presented, and above all real insights into the presentation side - that is to say, what is impressive to the spectator rather than the performer - which, to me, is so much more important than methods.
I particularly loved "The Article" and "The Score". One of my best buys this year. |

Why does a professional need to buy it? They don't need to. But that's no reason not to.
I purchased this set for three reasons. First, I love books. My mother instilled in me a great love of the written word, and finding a beautifully bound book is almost enough to motivate me to buy it no matter what it contains. I have a few books I cannot even read (languages I don't speak) just because I enjoy the physical book so much. Second, I genuinely enjoy studying this art form. I constantly look for methods I've not learned yet which means I can constantly improve my act. I don't often change the things I perform, but I do search for the best methods to perform those things. And lastly, I purchased it because it has something I hold very valuable: Information about a successful performer's experience and thinking. When I began learning magic I found The Magic News Wire interviews. I listened to all of the ones that existed. I got more information about being a performer and creating success from those interviews than any book or DVD I purchased. To this day I constantly look for sources for the philosophies of magic, the methods of building a successful business, real world experiences, etc. These are very valuable. So the price tag isn't about the tricks for me - though I will use some of Looch's methods and indeed, two of them helped me improve a portion of my show dramatically. I care more about the essays and interviews.

I haven't made it all the way through yet but one thing about it that I didn't like was the use of the filter to read certain pages... just useless in my opinion... just one more thing to hope and pray that you don't lose by accident as time goes by.
One of the main reasons I purchased the book(s) was for "Influence" which I had seen Looch perform on YouTube awhile back. I found the technique disappointing to say the least after reading it. I skipped around skimming different parts after that and haven't picked it up since. |

Some of my biggest reactions have been from effects where the method is something that I am sure would disappoint many. If you are performing for cool, super sneaky methods---that's fine. There are a lot of effects out there to choose from. If on the other hand, you want to make a lasting impression on a spectator or spectators---remember that the method is unimportant so long as it creates the miracle you seek. |

Most guys I would suspect get more excited about discovering a new method more than an innovative use of a well known method. I am the opposite. I like innovative uses of the simple, well known methods. When something comes along that is a "revolutionary" method, it's seldom practical or reliable, but one in a thousand or so is truly innovative, unique and WORKS.
Besides that, building up drama, suspense, surprise in mentalism is our greatest challenge and the method doesn't help much with that. It helps, but not much. One of the most popular demonstrations I do uses the cr*ss c*t f*rc*. It's SO SIMPLE, but absolutely stuns. That to me is pure gold. |
