Since it's been a it slow around here as I suspect it has been a very busy performing time of year, I though I'd pose a question as we look forward to the upcoming new year. It's actually kind of a two-part question...
-What are your New Year's Resolution for your business in the upcoming new year? and... -What did you learn, add, improve or progress in this last year that was helpful and productive to your entertainment business operations? I wish a very happy, healthy & prosperous new year to everyone here! |

New Years Resolution - do a complete review of my business plan and incorporate the learnings from the past year. Specifically; refine my mission statement and USP and ensure my strategies and activities are prioritized around them. Comb over my current website, marketing materials and show content and revise them based upon my learnings from the past year.
This past year I greatly deepened my understanding of many of the business concepts necessary to run a business. Interestingly, I discovered much more about what I don't know than what I actually learned. |

Resolution: I want to continue to streamline and grow my business - meaning I want I want to continue to increase my magic income but with more efficiency. By efficiency I mean I want more systems in place that get results. An example of this would be a marketing piece I can send to prospective clients that will result in increasing my number of clients.
What I Learned: the importance of believing in myself - what I mean is - there are times when I have an opportunity to book a gig and I feel very apprehensive about it, I question if I am ready for it, for example, when I started performing at a bar I didn't think I was ready, but I went through with it, it took at least 6 months before I began to believe that yes I can do it. Likewise I had an opportunity this month for a gig that included performing for an audience of 200 people, I didn't go for it because I didn't feel ready but in hindsight I wish I had gone for it like I did with the bar gig. This is just one example but there have been other instances. |

My resolution is to spend more time focused on my business and actually getting important work done. While I have made a decent living I have been rather lazy in my efforts to secure gigs and typically just wait for clients to reach out to me. Also, using all my recent media attention to my advatage whether its to secure higher paying gigs, promo material, etc.
So much to do and so little time. Also, Not waiting to new years to get it all done. As Soon as I Finish writing this I am right back to work. |

I learned there is a lot I haven't thought about, and didn't know was a "big deal".
I learned I must get focused and active if I want to progress as a business. I learned that becoming a better performer will not necessarily better my business. In the coming year, I will: -- learn more how to run this as an entertainment business (vice just phone rings and payments) -- focus on one market and the show and systems for that market until it works -- refine my web presence as a workable system (Now, if I could only find those books Charlie's talking about .....) Starting one actually sounds like a good resolution to me!

My New Year's resolution for my business is to not take anymore advice from those who are jealous of me.

I resolve that 2015 will be my best business year ever. I started part time in the magic entertainment business about 23 years ago and went full time in April of 2008 when I got laid off from the phone company for the third time. I am still full time in magic entertainment as we go into the new year. My wife still works part time, however, on weekday mornings and I resolve to increase my magic income enough in 2015 to replace her income and give her the option to retire completely whenever she wants.
What I learned in 2014 is that I need to take my marketing seriously and not "poke at it". I have learned that social media really is important for promotional purposes. I have also learned to accept the fact that while I may be good at performing an entertaining show, I do not have the same expertise at creating a viable marketing plan which includes web site design, Google marketing, and lead generation. I have learned to get over the 'pride thing' and let an expert in marketing put my business on the right track--this is currently in progress. A very very Happy New Year to everyone & may every DAY of 2015 be MAGIC for you. --Charlie |
