Does anyone know where I can get a P&L or Kirkendall-style finger reel, preferably with a finger clip? I searched all the "usual suspects" without any luck. I know one dealer who is selling an Owen version for $75, but I think that's a little more than I would like to pay. Thanks in advance.

Stevie! I bought my first reel in 1947. I "blew" $1.50 on it! It is/was one of the best investments I ever made.

Generally speaking, it's more for parlor and platform work. Albenice's book is still about the best book on the reel.

As with anything, you cannot buy a Cadillac at Chevy Spark prices. If you just want a reel there are plastic imports available for less then $10.

Do a search in this section for reels, I have referenced sources for low costs reels.

I remember when George Kirkendall first brought out his reels. They were $15 which was high priced then. The last ones he was making were going for $75. Materials and the cost of doing business very seldom goes down.
I find any reels in my drawers extra I will contact you and give you a deal. I don't know what I have any more extra.

The last Kirk' I saw went for $85.00. I'd pay that in a heartbeat! Mine lasted for years. Since the foreclosure there are some things I will never get back. That's one of them. Unless I find one for sale. They are not maintenance-free, though. Hoppe's Gun Oil is what I used on mine.

I would never use oil, as it can leak out and get on the hands and silk. The time tested product is Vaseline. Just enough to keep the spring and disk spacers lubricated.

Yes, Bill you are correct and that is what George told people to use.

I just barely put enough between the spacers, not a chance of leaking. Vaseline is good. So is silicone...
