Also a difference between ‘More’ and ‘Again’
More could mean ‘I need more to decide.’ ‘Again’ means they like it as is. A great movie is one that we would like to see ‘Again’ Not sure we would want them to change it. Tom

Most of us do not yet understand that magic is to the mind what steel is to the body.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I'm not sure you can support your point as well as this can counter it, Tom. Here's the JOYOUS ! truth:
But I think we can only really have a blend of both, which may just make your point moot. Performance is interactive. Even if that great movie doesn't change, the spectator viewing it has. Emphemerality. |

I took a nap earlier and now I'll be awake all night. So... here's an article, FWIW.
http://www.tfm.uni-frankfurt.de/Mitarbei......rben.pdf "This piece of anecdotal evidence is relevant also because it points to the methodological difficulties a discussion of repeat viewing necessarily entails. The practices of film reception are always difficult to reconstruct. Like all everyday behavior, spectator behavior is ephemeral." |

At what point do you decide that enough is enough when you are blocked for a certain time limit? A few weeks ago I was hired to do about and hour of magic. I was coming to the end with still a few tricks left when I sensed that my audience has reached their limit. One or two more tricks and I would have lost the good feeling I worked so hard to do.
I went to my finale and ended the show with good feelings. I noticed I didn't finish the hour. Nothing was said about it, but I wonder if the people that hired me will be more concerned about that and not on the fact that the audience got enough entertainment? |

I feel like its a very grey area. I personally think thank you should judge it personally. Usually you can tell if there into it and if so continue on, but you shouldn't continue on until the point where they never want to see magic again. It's also best not to do so much magic that they don't remember it all. You should let the magic build up going until a super powerful closer. Then they'll be amazed and satisfied and wonder what else you can do ( making them want to see more).

Don't overbook a show. 30 minutes for most shows is a looooong time if you have good tight material. You leave them wanting not more magic, but more YOU. The magic or whatever is always to a certain degree incidental to the performer. The performance, even if videoed, is something that is lost. It happens and it's gone. What remains if the person that did the show. That's why there can be cults of personality. People like Elvis's music, but the loved Elvis. People don't claim to that they saw an errant piece of Elvis sheet music. They claim they saw Elvis.
Leave folks wanting to see YOU again and you can make a good living as a performer in any venue.

I saw Bruce Springsteen do a show that lasted several hours... and I wanted more!!! (indeed, I've seen him several times since). On the other hand, I saw Van Morrison once perform a very short set, playing harmonica most of the time instead of singing and walked away disappointed and thinking I wouldn't pay to see him again!
