Step back in time to 1692 with your spectators and have them examine a book full of history of the Salem Witch Trials. Use it to perform several mind-reading miracles on a variety of audience members. You let anyone open to any page in the Narrative History of the Trials section and you can immediately read their thoughts about what is on the page. Then you have anyone choose any accused person from the Trial Results section, and you can tell them exactly who they are thinking of, whether the accused was convicted or innocent, their sentence at the trial, even the month the trial was held and the exact number of participants. A truly unique prop, method and routine. A magnificent prop, Salem is an a careful reproduction of an antique book written in the 1600s about the Salem witch trials. It has old original woodcut illustrations, fancy flourish title lettering and detailed information about witchcraft in Early America. It looks authentic and genuine, yet is is meticulously gaffed to allow you to perform not one, but several strong effects. The book has two sections, both different in formatting and type of information. Each one allows you to perform several different effects. Use either or both sections. Make one quick revelation or carry out a 20-minute routine. In the Narrative Section, the spectator opens to any page and reads the first line to herself. You tell her the exact nature of what she has read. She can turn to another page and you repeat your divination. Do it three or five times in a row. Each page is different and each time, you know exactly what the spectator is thinking about. Best of all, the book can be read from cover to cover with absolutely no clue as to the method. It truly reads and handles like a completely normal book. There are no short pages, no duplicate pages, no repeating vocabulary, no long obscure words, no unintelligible sentences—nothing to tip off the method to anyone. In the Trial Results section, each page has facts and information about a specific person on trial for witchcraft. Without knowing the page or seeing the text, you can tell the spectator the full first and last name of the accused, whether she was found guilty or innocent, whether she was hanged, drowned, stoned, pressed or released. You can even tell the exact month the trial was held and how many people attended. All without looking at a thing. No fishing, no elaborate memorization, no special cheat sheets, no extra props, no outside gaffs, no stooges. So easy, you will be performing it in no time. Although the effects are very easy to perform, Salem includes an elaborate 20-page manual with information, routines, tips, suggestions, background and more, plus free helpful “reminder” bookmarks. Salem is a terrific addition to your arsenal of mentalism or bizarre routines. The story of the Salem Witchcraft trials is fascinating to everyone, and this magnificent prop allows you to perform miracles around that story. Created by Jim Kleefeld. So I have a copy of this in hand. It looks amazing. If you like Ipswich you will love this, no question.
Presentation: Initially flipping through this is exciting. There is a real energy / pulse to the look of this one. Fans of Ipswich will pause at this books layout. The edging on the pages is rough like ip2 and looks great. Even the manual is done as collectable. Very nice. performance: I have not done this for more than friends and family at this point. ...but it's easy. Really easy. I won't discuss methods but this can be done simply in 2 minutes or as a full blown presentation easily lasting an hour. You will understand the mechanics of the book in minutes. You will brainstorm possibilities for hours. There are multiple effects possible so angles of presentation are broad. Bottom line: fans of Ipswich - just get it. You know you will. Others - if you are doing spooky then witchcraft themes are either in your wheelhouse or will be. this is solid for novice or pro. I'm torn between this and Ipswich 2 for my favorite. Both offer versatility which is a big deal to me as I like things that will work not just on a stage but also from behind the counter. I'm gonna need a bigger shelf. Love it! Amazing work, and as usual, exceeded my expectations. [/URL] |

Oh my.... Looks like I am going to need to head back into the Reactor Building of a few Nuclear Power Plants and absorb more Ionizing Radiation in order to afford this as well as other items. Procuring these fantastic items is becoming dangerous to my health, if I am not careful!!!
BTW, ordered mine already and cannot wait to see it first-hand at ECSS! |

I have one of these in hand as well and can confirm all that has already been said. Jim & Vic have a real winner here for fans of the Ipswich line, performers interested in a witch-themed effect (or event!), and anyone just getting started down the road of the Salem theme. Nice for a one-off quick effect with one spec or for a much longer story effect with a whole audience looking on. Lots of possibilities for bringing in ancillary effects with this, too.
Well done, Jim and Vic. BC

I'm not big on buying things, as I'm sure most of those who sell things here are well aware by now, but if I weren't having such a sucky month financially I'd pick that up in a heartbeat.
Just sayin'.

I have ordered one. In very recent years, Jim Kleefeld has produced several original, and powerful, mentalism effects. If this is as good as Cinema Verite, and Classic Film Verite, and the book test he has already produced, this will be an interesting and engaging winner.

I just received "Salem" and here are my first thoughts.
The outward appearance of the book is very similar to "Ipswich." Same size, same color, same gold foil lettering. If you were to place the two books face down, you may have a hard time telling which is which. While "Salem" is supposed to be from the 1860s, I'm not sure it can pass muster as a book that's been kicking around for over 150 years. For one thing, the gold foil lettering seems a bit too shiny to me. Of course, there's a simple workaround to this: Don't say how old the book is. The aging on the interior pages of "Salem" is more subtle than that on "Ipswich." "Salem" is divided into two sections. Each section is a separate routine. You can perform either or both. The first section, called the narrative section, is a 75 page account of the witch trials and is the basis for a telepathy routine. The section is completely readable from beginning to end with nothing fishy to be seen. The spec silently reads the top line and the performer reveals the nature of what she has read. The performer can go on to reveal the nature of the top line on the opposite page, the next/previous page or all of the above. Theoretically, you could have ten reveals but this would be overkill. In order to perform this effect, the performer must learn the page number freely selected by the spec. The performance manual doesn't shy away from this issue and does offer some scripting subtleties which should be of assistance. The second section/routine is the one I think will be more attractive to bizarrists. This is the trial results section where the performer (or the spirits) can reveal 1) the name of the accused 2) the month of the trial 3) the number of people in attendance 4) the verdict and/or 5) the punishment. The spec has a free choice of page and the performer need not know the page number. The method is pretty impenetrable. The punishments listed are more historically accurate than in some other Salem-themed effects (There are no references to burnings) and some of the names used are of people involved in the actual trials though some of the outcomes listed may not gibe exactly with history. As would be expected from Jim Kleefled, the manual is very thorough. It includes a sample script which covers both sections/routines and explains the artistic choices he made in assembling this effect. Jim Kleefeld encourages the performer to research the background of the actual trials in order to be able to more credibly perform before specs who may be knowledgeable on the subject. The hits in "Salem" are fairly easy to memorize but it comes with a couple of built-in cribs just in case. "Salem" is $225. As well as being available from Gemini Artifacts it can also be purchased at http://www.jimkleefeld.com/ |
