How did this lecture go Sunday night. I thought there would be great raves.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

I have not seen it, and from what I've read about it, and what people likely expected (him tipping some methods), I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been some scathing reviews.
It seems like it was much more of an interview than a lecture, and he didn't demonstrate any actual methods for things he does. |

To be honest, it was more of an interview rather than a lecture. Derren Brown is a genius and this interview was more about theory and insight for the seasoned mentalist. This certainly was not for beginners. If you were looking for methodology and discussion of routines etc; you would be disappointed because he did not do that. I would say the format was completely different than any other penguin live lecture; namely it was not a lecture at all. But true mentalists will appreciate and marvel at the insight he provides into the art.

They're discussing it in Penny. Seems like a lot of people foolishly expected him to tip methods, and were thus disappointed that he didn't.

Why anyone thought that Derren Brown was going to sit and discuss his methods is beyond me. Use a little common sense.

You are absolutely right. I think any seasoned mentalist knew that he would not be discussing or revealing any methodology that he uses and it seems the vast majority of individuals who reviewed the interview on Penguin believed he would and are therefore quite disappointed.
Not that Derren Brown is materialistic, but if he's going to tip methods and "give away" part of his act, I would think the price would be higher than $25 for that information. |

I have just watched it and I think that those who are disappointed were expecting the usual style of penguin lecture. With Derren teaching a few things, clearly that was never going to happen.
I think it would have been better to have advertised it as an interview, which is what it was. Maybe then people would have known not to expect the usual format and get something totally different to what they expected.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

My thoughts and much more are on penny 😘
Actually I would say that this interview might be more ideal for beginners. Nothing heavy was discussed. He seems like a nice guy which we already knew.

Guys like Fogal and Al Koran discussed methods when they lectured.

I suspected it might strictly be an interview which is why I didn't plunk down $25 for it before reading reviews. But then again Derren has released books and a lecture video in the past where he discussed methods so it's a bit of a shady move by Penguin by not clarifying that the format of this lecture would be different.

I purchased the derren brown's lecture dvd nearly 10 years ago or so: even though he explains 1 card trick only,he does go into more depth on psychology and psychological insights to lots of his material at that time and performs several of the effects, hypnosis trances, suggestion etc on the lecture dvd. I myself thought this particular lecture promoted by penguin would be more of an intervieiw, therefore refrained from purchasing. The Derren Brown Lecture Dvd I think you can still purchase from penguin magic ? I purchased mine from International Magic (London). http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S7881 Graham

I would not have pre purchased had I known it was strictly an interview.

Penguin Live lectures follow a pattern, do they not? A renowned performer shows some effects and then explains them. If Penguin wanted to do an interview they should have done one separate from the "Penguin Live" banner.

Acar had said here on the Café that Derren and Dynamo "lectures" were interviews. The others filmed overseas were lectures.

I gained much more from this interview with Derren than from, for instance, the lecture by Marc Salem that I purchased through Penguin. That was an utter waste of money, in my opinion. Sure, Salem taught some tricks and methods, but almost nothing any student of mentalism would be unfamiliar with. Salem came off as an arrogant, condescending performer, displaying no compelling stage presence, and who acted as though he'd rather be anywhere else but giving said lecture. Awful.
If I had a nickel for every time he went on about how many times he's appeared on Broadway or 60 minutes, blah, blah, blah. Derren was charming, pleasant, and interesting. You could learn more from how he carries himself in this interview than from 4 mind-numbingly boring hours of Salem. Derren is extremely high-profile. Fans of his (who are not magicians) will see this interview. Possibly the media will have a look. If I were him, I'd be coy and ambiguous regarding any methods, too. That doesn't mean he can't share valuable insights with our community. He can, and he did. But, you'll miss it if you're expecting or looking for something else. Forest for the trees.
It's all in the reflexes.

It was interesting to hear Derren say that his International Magic Lecture DVD was so bad and makes his skin crawl to go back and watch it.
re: Other than Derren and Dynamo being interviews and all the rest are lectures, wasn't David Beglas an interview as well? If his is a lecture, that would be worth any price for me. |

Many big stars have done lectures where they have been very generous about providing methods, wisdom, etc. My feeling from past Penguin Magic Lectures is the lecturers have really poured out their knowledge and held back very little. I've seen lectures where they have tipped the method even for things they sell separately. This was a big disappointment. KJ |
