O.k. some readers are going to think this post should be in the section on card tricks, but I want to post it here because it works so well on the Street and you readers are the ones
I feel who will appreciate the need to go with the flow, since so often much of our street magic performing needs to be improv or instantly adjusted. Hmm, maybe I will also post it in the card section of the Café. Do as I Do card trick when key card is changed I was out busking yesterday, Saturday 10 Jan 2015 at TheRiverTraders market at Wanganui, New Zealand and performing the card trick You Do As I Do. I work the trick without a table, while the the helper and I are standing up. We had each shufffled our deck, and I had sighted the bottom card of my deck before we swapped our decks over. Then to my surprise, I saw the helper shuffle the deck, losing my key card in the process! What was I do to, now I couldn't use the key card I had noted for the trick? I had my wits about me, and asked her "Show me that you have shuffled the cards to mix them up properly." She fanned them face up and showed them to me, and I took a look at the new bottom card. So now I knew the new key card. I was able to just continue the trick and see the astonishment at the end of the trick when both of us had picked the same card. My son Zane told me an alternative approach in setting the scene. Get the helper up front and tell her "Pick any card, but please don't pick the same card as I will." You can justify this by such a thing as announcing "It's so embarasing for me when that happens." Act that out with your body language. During the patter point out to the crowd that the helper has a free choice of any card, and further, tell her 'I will let you pick the card you want first, so I won't be influencing you." Other routines for the Do As I Do usually just have the magician and helper turn their cards over and they find they have the same card. The audience is just looking on. But with the revealing of the cards in my routine, the spectators know before the helper that the two cards are the same. During the revelation of our cards, I am the first to show around to everyone my card before she shows the card she picked. That reinforces the idea that she has anticipated my card when she had first pick of a card back at the beginning of the trick. The routine I developed of us both being up the front, she alongside me, but neither seeing each other's chosen card, and me being the first at holding face out at arm's length the card I chose and keeping the arm extended as I swing around to show all folk my card and so make it impossible for my helper to see what my card is and then getting her to then do the same to show her card means she does not know the name of my card. Do not expect applause at this stage from the audience. They are so stunned to see that we have both picked the same card that the silence as they realize this can be un-nerving to the inexperienced magician using my closure of the trick. For that matter, as the magician I don't actually know that we both are showing the same trick. I expect/hope it is the same but I don't know it for sure until I pull my hand in to waist height and she copies me and us two up front compare our cards. Only then does the helper realize what has happened, to her astonishment e both chose the same card. Then you need to encourage the crowd to clap. You can do this by applauding both of us performers, or by directing attention to the helper for her part in the trick.
The presentation makes the magic.
