I heard from a French friend that the name of the Charlie Hebdo magazine is taken from Charlie Brown (Hebdo means Weekly). My friend, who is in his 50's, has read the magazine religiously since he was 16 years old. Whenever he could not afford to buy it, he would go to the newsstand to at least read the headlines.

Yes, and after what must have taken many hours, they came up with a very gentle cover. One can only guess what lay crumpled on the floor. No matter, though, as Muslim bigwigs decried it as if it were truly evil. Of course, any religion that forbids making a snowman is more than a little off the mark. As Mr. Majestic once said, "Well, then I guess there's no point in trying to get on your good side"...

It's the same with Baha'is (although you will never see such ridiculous backlashes from Baha'is, ever). Even in the movie portraying the life of the Prophet Muhammad, He was portrayed as a "voice" only, no image was provided. In my family, I respect my wife and kids by viewing things from "their" perspective and empathising with what may be affecting them relating to a certain matter. I think many in the world would benefit in doing the same with Muslims and their Prophet. Kam

Hi Kam, in another thread, it was pointed out by a Muslim gentleman the Quoran suggests that "Allah is to 'beaufiul and amazing" (I paraphrase, sorry) that his likeness cannot be captured or reproduced. not that you cannot draw him.
Someone more learned on the subject will I hope correct me.

I will respectfully disagree with you Kam. Islam is "binding" on Muslims. We cannot allow religious groups and their leaders to subjugate non-followers.
Freedom of expression is a deeply held value in Western society. This freedom is as valuable to most Western cultures as is respect for the Prophet to Muslims. I see no compelling moral reason for one side to force the other to submit to its will. John

Nothing can free religion from the bondage of restrictive prohibition than the acceptance of free speech and expression, especially in regards to the investigation of truth. I am always a believer that there is a line that should not be crossed as a human being, and that line is determined by "others" and not by me, for if I was to draw the line, then we have a society full of self regulated animals. Chaos will ensue Maybe another approach to contemplate would be to say that my family's values is not binding on my neighbours, yet one would still expect our neighbours to not send a newspaper report outlining how they think that my wife dresses inapproprately and my children bring different boyfriends back home with them every night, and sleep around, and in fact housing rampant orgies. To our neighbours, they are simply painting a funny picture of what they see as "humour".....I (and you I hope) may see it quite differently Kam

"Days After Free Speech Rally, France Arrests 54 People for Offensive Speech"
http://www.commondreams.org/news/2015/01......e-speech I propose a new unit of time measure, the hypocri-second. It measures the time it takes for government officials to make hypocritical fools of themselves after a given pronouncement. Thus far, it is the smallest unit of time known to humankind.

I'm not familiar with the laws in question, landmark, nor with the details of the charges. "Inciting terrorism" could very well be a reasonable charge and reasonable limitation on free speech. Of course, it could also be a hypocritical political sledgehammer. Hopefully we'll see some details.

What the Pope says:
http://news.yahoo.com/pope-charlie-hebdo......260.html Francis spoke about the Paris terror attacks while en route to the Philippines, defending free speech as not only a fundamental human right but a duty to speak one's mind for the sake of the common good. But he said there were limits. By way of example, he referred to Alberto Gasparri, who organizes papal trips and was standing by his side aboard the papal plane. "If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch. It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

BTW I think Dieudonne is an anti-semitic a*hole; but if one really believes in free speech, then one defends the right of Charlie Hebdo and Dieudonne to talk trash. You don't arrest him after marching triumphantly in the streets for free speech. I have no idea why the 53 others were arrested, but based on this, I'm not optimistic.

On Jan 15, 2015, landmark wrote: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people......667.html Paris state prosecutors opened a formal investigation on Monday night into remarks made by the comedian on his Facebook page after the vast "Republican march" in Paris on Sunday. After mocking the media superlatives about the march, the comedian declared: "As for me, I feel I am Charlie Coulibaly". Amedy Coulibaly was the man who took hostages and killed four people at the Jewish supermarket in eastern Paris last Friday before being killed by police. Dieudonne's comments generated a wave of fury on the internet - including many angry reactions from his own fans on his Facebook page. His statement was withdrawn after less than an hour. The French interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, called the comment "abject" and asked his officials to investigate whether the comedian should be prosecuted for breaching a French law which forbids "apology for" or encouragement of terrorism. The Prime Minister Manuel Valls made an impassioned attack on the comedian in the National Assembly on Tuesday. He called him a "peddler of hate and said there should be no confusion between the 'impertinent' satire of Charlie Hebdo and 'anti-semitism, racism and negationism'." Dieudonne has several convictions for making anti-semitic comments and jokes. Dieudonne's stage show was banned a year ago, and had to be amended, because it contained "jokes" mocking the Holocaust. He also suggested that a Jewish radio presenter "reminded him of gas chambers".
