Generally speaking. I have questions for everyone who reads the thread. Mentalism. Why do you perform it? Why is it special for you? What motivates you to become better at it? I`m very curious about the possible motives for people to perform mentalism.

It's a perfect cover for my genuine Satanic powers. If I can perform a few effects with ESP cards, nobody will ever suspect the true source of all of my demonic abilities to be my Dark Lord and Master, Lucifer.
Every time they try to bust me for witchcraft and sorcery, and burn me at the stake, I just tell them I'm a mentalist, and they let me go. And it's a lot of fun at parties. As long as we all smoke pot and play Black Sabbath records backwards a few times, first.

It allows me to create a mysterious experience related to something so universal and deep, as the human psyche, that let me reach my artistic goals.

Pablo, I think yours is the best reply so far. I'd have said it that way myself, but a little demon whispered to me that you were going to say it, so I left it open for you.
Seriously though, I love how well you put it. That sums it up perfectly for me, too.

You might as well ask, "Why do people play the guitar or violin?" or "What do standup comedy or act?" "Why write poetry or novels?:
It's what I love and something I've learned to do well. And people like it and pay me very well to perform it. |

they pay me not to perform Mentalism. Does that count?

Hey, as long as love and money are involved, you can't go wrong either way, I think. Two of the biggest motivators for most people.
Bob's got a great point there, though. Why does anyone do what they love? Because they love it. Getting paid to do what you love is a big plus, of course. Tends to happen when you love something well enough to get good really at it. But love just happens, you know?

Mr. Bob Cassidy
That was the questions, among poetry, guitar, stuff, classical magic, why exactly mentalism? Why is it so special for you? I wanted people to share their feelings about their own performance experience. |

Like I said, it's something I love and that I do well.
There is no "why" when it comes to love. It just happens. Don't question it. |

Uhm, I can`t really argue with that statement, although I really wanted to understand the reasons based on your life experience.

For me, I can't say I've been doing mentalism for very long but I am becoming more interested in it. I find it is a way of doing "magic" that is more personal for spectators, since in general I think mentalism involves the spectators' thoughts and feelings more than other forms such as cards or coins. Also, there is an element of diversity: I always used to do cards (and still do) but I know that nobody wants to see ten straight card tricks, whereas there are many types of mentalism effects that do not blend together in the way that ten straight card tricks might.

I love this art and the history attached to it. To answer your question though, it has provided a great outlet whereby I can demonstrate my true character, i.e. - Mischievous, articulate, and entertaining. I would like to think that I am a competent performer, my re-bookings tends to suggest that I am. I charge a significant fee, this tends to keep me & the bank manager happy!
So, first for me is my desire to perform, secondly I get paid well....

You have to love what you do, if you don't the audience will pick up on it. My brother plays guitar and as he plays his eyes close and he's in world of his own, and it shows. You have to have a passion for your chosen vocation? I can't imagine repeatedly doing something you don't enjoy.
