Hi there,
I'm José from Portugal, currently living in Germany. I started doing magic a while ago shortly after I graduated and did so for about two years. By the end I had done some shows in small pubs (mostly for fun as the money was little). I stopped for about 7 years when I moved to Germany and just got back to magic about two months ago. I can't even understand how I stopped since I enjoy it so much. At the moment I'm deciding where to go with my magic. I mostly do card tricks but I have a taste for mentalism ( however I'm dislike having to explain that I don't have real powers ). Getting back I've been doing mostly: - 4 card trick - Biddle trick - Twisting the aces - and any improv I can think off, usually based on either classic force + whatever or ambitious card. Right now I: - Am working on a trick of my own (which still fails quite often and requires an almost mint deck) which I may ask here for tips on improving. - Should take some time and write down an ambitious card routine instead of improvising every time. My biggest issue is dealing with anxiety when performing, I often start shaking which kind of ruins it. That is all for now, I hope I haven't written too much. If anyone in Darmstadt/Frankfurt/surroundings would like to meet-up for a coffee let me know. Cheers, José |

Welcome feiteira,
When I started I was very shaky and with time it has gotten much better. I still shake at times (in front of Magicians, close friends and in contests) I have dumped knacky flourishes last moment if I was too nervous at the time. It really helps to break the ice with easy and fun material. A good laugh can really help. I think it's about the diaphragm. Deep breathing before you start can also help. Make the performance more about making contact and having a good time vs fooling. If it comes on unexpectedly, touching something, like resting your hand or the cards on the table top can steady the shake. Also larger movements can mask a little ("big movement small movement"). It may help to know that sometimes the shake is much more noticeable to you. Remember, for the most part, audiences want you to succeed and are giving you positive energy. Bottom line, the more you perform the better it gets. You know from experience that even if it does happen, you will all survive so it is really not that big a deal. Alcohol and coffee are not your friends. ("A" drink to steady the nerves has ruined a lot of promising Magicians and killed some of the greats.) I have the same interest and problem with Mentalism as you. -Mary Mowder |

Welcome feiteira!
Common problem for just about every magician. I always start off with something that I can do in my sleep, then progress to more difficult or newer material. If I'm not feeling confident, I skip it and just move on. Keep up your practice and performances! You will get better. Hudson |
