I'm been experimenting with different objects and ideas for internal use in the Hobbs Judgement Box and I pulled out a little novelty I had sitting on my shelf.
The "Ghost Meter" is a low cost EMF detector, supposedly useful in detecting ghost (because we all know the best ghosts in town always gives off EMF signals). Well, the Hobbs Judgement Box gives off some of the best EMF around. You can have someone hold the meter while their hand is in the box, place the meter on the floor of the box, on top or almost anywhere within a few inches of the box and the meter will peak and the beeper will beep. Now this idea may not appeal to everyone. I realize it is a low tech item and the Judgement Box appears to have nothing to do with tech at all. You may think that using a tech object may tip too much, get people to thinking about the possibilities of hidden tech being used somehow. I've been trying out different things that can go into the box, along with the spectators hand that would be sure-fire, so to speak. This certainly fills that requirement. And if you follow up with using the top of the box and the bell or some other gaffed item on top, that's could suddenly destroy any thought of tech being in play. As detailed in Hiding the Elephant, Jarrett, who designed illusions for Thurston "chose to present the secret to the audience and then force them to rule it out in their own mind." Like I said, this is just and idea. http://www.amazon.com/The-Ghost-Meter-EM......00ZH7G1E |

I love my Ghost Meter, but they put out an updated version a few years ago with additionsl features (including a dialog mode)
It is called the Ghost Meter Pro. I use both in my investigations and GH parties. http://www.amazon.com/Technology-Alterna......+meter+2 |

That's a a great idea with the Judgement box. I have used the simple ghost meters that Tim gaffes for me and they work great. But as Al pointed out, any ghost meter will react nicely to almost all the Outlaw stuff. I have also had a half circle of ungimmicked emf meters around a dead ringer and all of them lit up nicely when the bell went off. I used it in a ghost tour where they hand out emf meters to everyone.
But I like adding in the modern day instruments along with the old stuff as it brings together both worlds and confirms with the emf that something strange is going on from a "scientific" viewpoint as well. And the ghost meters always get a nice freak out moment when they light up as well. |

Place a strange small object (ungaffed) of choice in their hand. Close the box. Do the dirty stuff. Ghost meter goes off. Now asked them if they felt the object move in their hand when the ghost started to inhabit the box. Wanna bet what the answer will be most of the time? 2) Don't use an object. Just suggest that they "grab" the spirit if it appears in the box. Bingo. I bet they will try to grab, I bet they will feel it for a fleeting moment. One better. 3) Hand in box, object in hand, ghost meter in bottom of box. Bell on top of box. Mumbo jumbo. Tell them you see the spirit. Follow the spirit in the room with your finger, slowly at first. Swing your finger down faster toward the top of the box. Just as your finger is level with the bell, trigger everything, but continue the downward motion fast with your finger. Bell rings, finger continues tracking spirit right into box, ghost meter starts beeping. If that doesn't get them, nothing will. |

Great stuff, gang. Thank you.
Handing several out to specs and having them huddle around the item would be an excellent way to draw in the group OR make a spectacle out of stage use. I dig it.

Ok this toppic is turning to gold I wish it was down stairs as the stuff here can really be powerful performance material.

I prefer to have a group of several volunteers together on stage for several of these type of routines as it increases the freak out factor when something happens which in turn makes the audience react even better. EMFs are good way to justify multiple folks up on stage. With the Departed I have people surrounding it on all sides to make sure everything is fair and to keep an eye out for any hidden (from the front view) spirit activity. It works great and great reactions. |

I think it perhaps works best if the meter goes off in a different area in the performance space and
"Then" migrates to the performance Artifact/Prop. This tends to diffuse the heat around the Artifact, yet validates it. That being said, I haven't used the meter and hesitate amplifying the potential of "werks" being employed in the specs mind. |

Side note - a while back I had Tim W gaff an emf meter to react to the trigger of the spiritus. Yum.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Naive question here...but why don't specs put two and two together with an EMF gauge? Personally, I would never want to use such a device if there is the possibility of an electrical engineering, or bright physics major, in the audience! (Is this really a non-issue?) Also, just have to say that the Hobbs was the best magic investment I ever made. I use it for a L&D test, and it kills (though I am still strengthening the routine).

Ok I'm not privy to elete or inner circle group...I step right up spends my money with OE,Gemini, and other here stateside and a bunch of over the pond creators and then I use some of their idea for routines...but I perform for a group that are into horror as their occupation,so I go deep into the water with my own routines- 1 question...where the heck is down stairs ? do I have to stand on one leg and wear chicken bones around my neck,do they want my first born? (since he's 37,comes back home pays no rent and eats my donuts - I'll toss him gladly) is there a secret sanctum for the spookies ?
