Here's part of the standard NFL contract that Lynch signed:
“Player will cooperate with the news media, and will participate upon request in reasonable activities to promote the Club and the League.” Hmmm...doesn't seem to pertain to playing football.

Notice, though, how his non-responses have garnered more media coverage than anyone else's cooperative responses, Deflate-Gate notwithstanding. In that respect, he has stubbornly obfuscated himself into becoming the mouthpiece for the League. And it's refreshingly genuine.

I don't think his shtick would have have a big approval rating apart from Seahawks backers, though. FWIW, I neither particularly like nor dislike the Seahawks.

This is red meat for the media, which exists solely to sell commercial air time. They should thank him and pay his fines.

I'd say he's fulfilled the spirit of his contract. His media interactions have made him one of the most popular players on the team. The NFL is selling LOTS of Lynch shirts, jerseys, etc.
It's obvious, Lobo, that you don't particularly like or dislike the Seahawks. But surely you must understand that you're talking to a few MAJOR fans here who aren't going to agree with ANYTHING negative said about our players in the lead up to the Superbowl. Go Hawks!! Go BEAST MODE!!!!!!!!!!!! |

LOL! Yes, you DO get it!
Remember, Lynch does come from Oakland and runs his main charity there. |

Thought experiment: how would you feel if Meryl Streep did the same in promoting her next film?

Did what? Showed up wearing a Beast Mode hat and saying that she's only showing up so she won't get fined?
But now that you mention it, I don't recall Meryl Streep being forced by any studio to do interviews with the press on a weekly basis, even though she's not at all nervous or self-conscious before cameras the way Lynch is. I hear she's a lousy linebacker, though. |

Without that media coverage there would be no professional sports.

Tony, you point is well taken but you're conflating the press with all of the media. Its the reporters who are harassing Lynch, not the media as a whole.

SInce many of us (but clearly not all) are performers, I think that somethings being seriously overlooked here.
The fact is that public speaking is one of the most common fears that people have. If you watch Lynch's interviews it's clear that he suffers from this. He's afraid of saying the wrong thing, etc. Just look at the nervous laughter in his last interview when he mentioned how much he loves his family. It was as if he was afraid he'd be mocked for saying something tender like that. He frequently gets stomach aches before even going out on the field. He's not an actor. He's not a stand-performer. He's just a guy who plays football. The word is that he's very talkative among his fellow players, friends and family, but put him in front of a mic in an unrehearsed situation and he's like a deer in the headlights. Sometimes people forget that even big tough-looking sports stars suffer from the same human foibles and fears as the rest of us. Give the guy a break and enjoy watching him do what he does best on the field. And let his charity work for disadvantaged children show you what kind of person he really is underneath it all. |

I do appreciate that, but he could still prepare a sentence or two. Leon Lett was a guy who had a serious public speaking issue. The impression I get of Lynch is that it's not really in the same vein, though maybe that's incorrect. I think he could handle saying something like, "They're a very good team. We're going to have to play well. We've been working hard, and I think it's going to be a great game. That all I've got."

Lett, btw, apparently got past his public speaking difficulties and now speaks at various schools. Maybe the NFL should start a private Toastmasters club.

Lynch HAS provided "a sentence or two" in the past. Just last week he answered all questions by saying, "I'm very thankful." I think he switched to "I'm just here so I won't get fined," because Sherman and his other behind-the-scenes "writers" suggested he needed a little variety.
This all reminds me of the old joke about the foreign man who came to America and wanted to get something to eat. Since he knew no English, a friend of his taught him how to say "Apple pie and coffee." He goes to a Café and it works just fine. But after a few days he gets tired of apple pie. So his friend teaches him to say "Ham sandwich." He goes back to the restaurant and when the waiter asks him for his order he says "Ham sandweets." The waiter responds, "You want that on white, rye or whole wheat?" The guy responds "Ham sandweets." "Yeah, I got that, buddy," replies the waiter. "What kind of bread you want it on?" "Ham sandweets," he stammers. "What kind of bread? And do you want mayo or butter?" "Apple pie and coffee." |
