There is an interesting Ring Routine in the just released eBook by Duraty and translated by Laurence O
"Irresistible Close Up" Everyone can find a move or two to add to their favorite Ring Routine if they don't want the entire thing. One that impressed me is a Four Ring Count Down in which a chain of four is held and the rings removed one at a time: 4-3-2-1 This allow me to do something always dreamed of -- I will start with five linked rings and then remove them one at a time as singles. (PM me if you don't get how the fifth ring is one the chain) From the stack of singles you pass out a single to one spectator and two singles suddenly linked in their hands to second person. You now perform your normal routine. Then you can end with Duraty's Five Ring Chain as a finale. ......... I seems to me that starting with all of the rings linked is more powerful than staring with them separate. Has anyone done this?

Sounds interesting Ken! Jay Marshall made his own rings when he was a young man. He made 6 rings. After month or so, he realized that he was only using 5 of the rings, so he 'red lighted' one! If you saw him, you remember that his was a "display" routine. He used no spectator assistants.
He made some of the designs that were a part of all or almost all of the old timers routines. Jay had a cloth bag that held the rings on his back. When he was in vaudeville, he walked on with the ACT in his pockets or on his body. The stage hands "loved" him!The rings were usually "next to closing. He tossed them into the wings when he finished, and closed with Lefty. When we played club dates together, one of my "jobs" was to catch the rings! When I started using rings (Jay sold me a set of 10" Merv Taylor rings for $40.00.) I developed a 5 ring routine with a triple, a single and a k--. I had never used rings until that fall of '71. From the first show, they played strong, and by the end of the first week, I could close the high school show with the rings. I have a one page manuscript from the late Carl Lohrey (Dayton OHIO dealer and old vaudevillian. If I remember, he started with a chain of rings. Some were w*r*d t*f*th*r, with th*n picture frame w*r*. --Darn clever these old guys!!!

For 63 years I have been doing 5-rings. As a kid, I did basically the Jay Marshall routine, but when I realized doing other people's material was wrong, I changed a lot and it became one of the strongest items in my repertoire.

Great Pete. Did you ever start with all five rings linked together?

I was just looking at Pete's book on the linking rings yesterday and was interested in one little thought of a set of rings hung up as a long chain. I don't have the book here right now or I would give page number. If I recall correctly, the idea was that it is essentially a prover ahead of time because the rings are displayed fairly openly on the stage and the performer can unlink them when the routine begins.
I do sort of like the idea of reaching into a small bag and pulling out a chain to start with. It allows for gags like Aldo Colombini's about saving time by showing them already linked. -Patrick |

Actually, the idea started when my wife gave me a set of brass linking rings. (relatives should never buy magic props)
SO, I started wondering how to do something different with Turkish Linking Rings ?? If they all started out linked together and I had to figure out how ....

Yup, Robert, that is what I am aiming at. The "unlinking rings"
Problem is that the silly things keep jumping back together when I'm not looking.
